I always hang out in the basement in baseball. So I'll totally be there. Looks like a party!

We'll all drink beer and eat corn nuts, since we're the bottom dwellers. To (somewhat) quote The Sandlot, "and we'll like it!"

OMG I haven't had corn nuts since like 4th grade!! Sounds good. I don't really like beer though... Can we drink Sunny D too? I think it goes better with the corn nuts. Maybe Sunny D and vodka.

Btw, look at us... the season hasn't even started yet, and already we've veered completely off the topic of baseball.

I just had Sunny D! I gave up coke for Lent (soda, not drugs... :p ), so I've been desperate for any kind of drink replacement - water, koolaid, tea, gatorade...the list goes on.

I always tell my mom that when I'm older, the only way I'm going to spend my free time is by drinking beer and watching baseball. Or at least that's what I'd like to do, and I might as well be honest.

Zia, me and you were never good at staying on topic last year, and now that Bethie's back in the game, our meandering chick chat will be endless.

Wow, you're so ambitious about your future free time... I haven't made plans like that yet. But hey, I'll send you a bag of pretzels once you get started, it'll go well with the beer. :p

Well, you should know that I'm a very analytical and obsessive person that plans everything out.

A clinician that came today to help the clarinets in band even observed that I'm one of those over-achievers that wants everything perfect, simply by how I was playing (I know, weirdo band people) - it reminded me of the "About You' thread.

Really, I just like to scare my mom into thinking I could become an alcoholic.

I'm actually drinking beer now. Who has the corn nuts?

By the way, I declared today as "Recruit Day" - I've now got 23 members in my fantasy group for school! Not sure how many will actually play, but hey, it's a start.

I even set up a web site (using Bravenet) for our group, where I posted an even more detailed guide to BBC, along with other info.

Great, Gina.

I just have to hide the cartoon from all members of my household, lest I allow myself in for a justifiable amount of ridicule.

CS, it just seemed funny to me that anyone could go nuts over something as trivial as a fantasy baseball game. You're not insinuating that you know someone who would do that...are you?

Plaw, that's funny you say that. I found this one in the paper today, and I nearly shared it with my mom - luckily, I realized that I would risk inspiring a speech on how I should be treating my schoolwork with the same regard that I do my silly fantasy game, and I decided against it.

Plaw, since you're a "fantasy parent," you'd never react that way, would you? :p And I already tried to get my mom and dad to join, so there's no hope in them joining the dark side.

CS, now that I've made you feel comfortable, I think it's time to make my pitch. My offer is this: um, please join BBC? C'mon...if you'll put up with all of that draft nonsense over in Yahoo, you can surely deal with this another year. You know, a full year...in competition with Plaw. *wink, wink* I mean, don't feel that I'm forcing you into anything - *nudge* - but we'll just miss you so much here!

Geoff, you...word-twister!

A "fantasy parent"

Obviously schoolwork should come first, but you can always point out that playing these "silly" games have a value above and beyond that of being purely recreational.

They foster a sense of responsbility and self-discipline (particularly those games in which daily attention and participation is a must); they require certain planning and research skills and the ability to plan ahead (for things like a draft or looking at pitcher-hitter-ballpark matchups to find those which are most advantageous); there are also mathematical aspects to just about all of them (in staying under a salary cap and deciding where the trade-offs come into play); and psychological aspects as well (like in making trades or trying to figure out which players your opponents might pick in a salary cap game in which you have the lead and are trying to "play defense".

At least that's how I try and sell it to his mother  .

Great stuff, Plaw.

I think I'll print this out and just keep it in a safe place - next time I let fantasy take priority over school, I'll test it out on my mom. And after being grounded from baseball for a week, I'll let you know how it went. :p

You do make a good argument, though.

She's already getting annoyed with my recruiting at school - I've got 26 other people in my group, now. I kept worrying that they wouldn't keep up with it - maybe they just joined to try it out and would end up forgetting about it - but now...there's incentive. Cash incentive.

Ahhhh our Gigi's a bookie now!!! I can hardly believe it... we're all growing up so fast.

Or did you mean you're bribing them to play? I can see that happening, too. "You sure you wanna quit? My friend Benjamin Franklin thought maybe you'd want to stay in, wink wink."

Gina,

NEVER call it a "cash" incentive. The proper term to use, for obvious reasons, is a "points" incentive.

Always use the word "points" instead of cash.

Points? What are you talkin' about? That's what I said. (Gotcha, DC. )

Zia, if I were bribing all of them, I'd have to introduce my friend, George Washington, instead.

A friend suggested the idea of us all putting money in, which the winner would get to keep, so I went with it. I've gotten "commitment" from most all of the players, but next week is "collection week" - if I end up having to muscle these characters, it ain't gonna be pretty. I tested out my "intimidation face" ( ) on some people today, while flashing my Godfather keychain at them - I think they know I mean business. I'm not going to be a part of the pool, because I've played the game longer than anyone else, but I'm hoping this idea will keep all of them interested.

Is it just me, or is the number of eligible players at each position much fewer ( :p ) this year? Or am I just used to the endless basketball lists?

Also, is it too early to start bitching about the beginning salary cap? :p

And, why am I predicting that Plaw isn't gonna last in this game, even tho it's tougher and more involving than his beloved Yahoo game? Where's his excitement here?

I get to be SC! WHINE ALERT! :p

(I'll always remember, SC was the first one here to tell me I needed a WA...which was the beginning of a long and prosperous career as a whiner. )

You don't sound much more excited than Plaw, though. Where's the enthusiasm, people? It's baseball season. Life begins again. The glory days. Entrance to heaven. The only sport that matters. So on and so forth.

You did not just go there.

Guess what...my new nickname at school is "Godmother." Ever since I started the "deal" with our BBC group, I've had to hassle people for the money and muscle them a bit, so I've earned the name among the friends of mine who know GF. Godmother sounds a little silly to me, but it works.

I'd recommend even a custom avatar advertising your fantasy skills, Plaw. Perhaps JG could keep it in place of Waldo until, say, the 2007 season?

That is, if you don't "let" him win. :p

What do you want if you win?

Altho I would prefer to play for money. And so confident am I that I will beat you, I will even offer you odds.

You name the stakes: How much per point, and I'll give you 2-1 odds on the money.

If you say, for example, 25 cents a point, then that's what I get if I win, but if you win I'll give you 50 cents a point.

A penny a point, ten cents a point, a dollar a point....I don't care.

Talk about making someone an offer they can't refuse.... :p

Completely random but you know what I just realized... During our first season of Baseball Challenge, I named my team "Douche Bigalow" with an "a" instead of an "e"...

Weird.

Anyway, after much debating, shows of intestinal fortitude, and copious amounts of Gina's "coke"... I'm in.

(Reading the old thread did the trick. )
