I've got the PS2 and a DVD player. I've never used the PS2 for DVD flicks. But I subscribe to several gaming magazines ( PSM, Electronic Gaming Monthly ), and every month there are letters galore regarding users having problems playing movies in the PS2. It's great Sony included the capability (in fact, it's one of the PS2's strongest selling points), but they should've done a little more homework.
