One thing I should add is this:

A common misconception people have is that the point spread is meant to reflect the relative strength of the two teams, which is absolutely not the case.

Professional sports bettors, though, have their own formulas for determining that.

And when they find a 10 point favorite that, in their opinion is only 7 points better than the other team, they bet on the underdog. Or vice-versa

But in no way is the point spread that we see meant to determine strngth. It's designed to simply attract an eual amount of wagering on each team.
