The Archbishop was out to swindle Michael for the 600 Million dollars, which was paid into the Vatican Bank, so that Michael would control Immobilarie...

After the money was paid into the Vatican Bank, the Archbishop then tried to stall Michael and along with Altobello, have him killed so he couldn't take over Immobilarie so they would then have gotten the 600 Million Dollars for free...

They even roped in Joey Zasa to put a spanner in the works...
