The Wrong Side Of The Tracks
|
I myself Don Rico, having never viewed The Godfather laserdisc version, would like to encourage anyone listening out there to compare and contrast the recent DVD release with this previous edition. How do the two versions measure in terms of film image, sound, overall quality and most importantly footage and deleted scenes? I dig the DVD but I want it all, ya know, and it infuriates me that the extra scenes must be accessed out of context on a whole separate disc. To me they are crucial. What is the laserdisc Godfather like?

I've got PAL copies of the 25th Anniversery editions The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II on laserdisc, but have yet to view them as my Laserdisc player won't run them properly beacuse of the differences in sound. The picture quality looked fine though...

Before CD's there were 12-inch vinyl records. Before DVD, there were 12-inch laserdiscs JG
I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! lol Whaddaya want me to do? Whack a guy? Off a guy? Whack off a guy? --Peter Griffin My DVDs | Facebook | Godfather Filming Locations

You got that right, Knocc! Laserdiscs used the same basic approach as DVDs--that is, encoding the information on the surface of the disc as pits and valleys (1's and 0's) read by a laser. But the old storage technology used in Laserdiscs meant that storage wasn't very dense, so you needed multiple discs, both sides, for a single movie. You had to get up and change the discs several times to watch a single movie. (Something like listening to symphonies on 78 rpm records, which I admit to being old enough to remember). Video and audio quality were very good, but few people wanted to put up with the inconvenience of changing those discs--to say nothing of the giant size of the discs. Sic transit laserdisc.

Besides, some Laserdiscs are collector's items now (like the Star Wars LDs).

Laserdiscs were 80's crap. You couldnt move for fear of banging about and knocking of the picture and you had to get up and down all the time. Useless

Yeah but Laserdisc as a medium for film was never truly viable, and that is why they never took off. My mate has one and it is the biggest piece of crap he owns and he has a Star Trek toilet roll holder.
