This is very sad. I gave my thoughts on ESPN SportsNation. He showed us that how little sports are in the big picture. RIP Pat Tillman.

This news of Tillman's death was nothing short of tragic. I agree with Freddie C. in saying that he should get inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. This man defined courage, patriotism, and sacrifice. He will forever be an inspiration and a hero to all Americans. RIP Pat Tillman.

As a society and within the media, the word "hero" is used too frequently. In sports, a "hero" is someone who won a game in spectacular or dramatic fashion. On the cover of Sports Illustrated was Tom Brady, after having won his second Super Bowl in three years. The headline was "The Hero (Again)." Not to dismiss the accomplishments of Tom Brady on the football field, but he's no hero.
Pat Tillman is a "hero." A true hero. The firefighters and police officers who risked and gave their lives on September 11, 2001, are "heroes."
By now, most of the U.S. has heard the story of Pat Tillman: a soldier who was a millionaire football player and decided to serve his country after the horrific events of 9/11. Not only did Tillman forfeit his $3 million p/yr salary, he forfeited the opportunity to become an officer within the military, which was Tillman's right by way of earning his college degree.
Pat Tillman was better than most of us. He gave everything that he had to offer his family & country. May there be more like him and may his family & friends have our nation's deepest sympathy.

A great American Hero in every sense of the word. Other than John Kerry, what other rich guy voluteered to risk his life like that on the front lines for America?

The Arizona Cardinals are going to retire his jersey (#40) and are dedicating a part of their stadium in his name. I'm guessing that he'll have a special tribute on the NFL season opener, or at least Arizona's home opener. The NFL is in fact going to dedicate the 2004 season to him.
Pat Tillman is something else. I think of many current athletes that would give up playing in pros for big money to earn $18,000/year in the military and ultimately give your life at age 27. America will never forget him as a hero, and may God be with him.
