We were all "First Timers". My experience in life is that when you aspire to mediocrity, that's what you achieve.
And considering that the only person who played regularly (and I'm sure even he missed a few days) you finished in front of was SC, I'd hardly say that you finished "in the middle".
I will give you credit for sticking with it long after you had no chance to win, unlike JJ, OA, and HH. Unfortunately, though, beating those three was no achievement.
