Picking offensive players playing against your pitching staff amounts to essentially a hedge against having a really bad day. Imagine if SC refused to pick any Mets today... He would have even had a worse day.

This hedge is risky though, as we've discussed before because i) you have to pick the offense that produces against your PS, ii) the only way you come out on top is if they get extra basehits (as SC's Mutt choices did today) and iii) you do it at the expense of offensive/PS balance as plaw pointed out.
