Rant Alert! 3 runs for Detroit. All unearned. Two out, nobody on. Guy reaches on a throwing error by Tejeda. Next guy walks. Then a three run homer. All runs unearned. Makes no sense (yeah, I know we've been through this before, but this is a rant, remember?). The run that scored because of the error...OK, not the pitcher's fault. Call it unearned. But the walk and the homer? The pitcher gave those up. Those runs should be earned. I know the logic. If not for the error, pitcher would have been out of the inning. Yeah, but he still gave up the walk and the homer. That was all his doing. And those two guys would have batted next inning if not for the error. Who's to say what the result would have been? By calling the runs unearned, it's as if (for ERA purposes, anyway) those two ABs never happened. Here's a question: Same situation as above. The A's take out Zito after the three-run homer. New pitcher comes in. Two out, nobody on. He proceeds to give up more runs. Are those earned or unearned?

Originally posted by Don Sicilia: As for your new scenario, plaw, I bet all those runs given up by the new pitcher are unearned also. Same thinking... the team should have been out of that inning. Which, if you're correct, makes absolutely no sense. New pitcher, clean slate...What's the difference between this scenario, and the new pitcher starting a new inning? If teh subsequent runs he gives up are unearned, you're letting him come into the game with nothing to lose on his ERA. Which is why I would guess that for a new pitcher, the runs would be earned, as they should be. The error didn't affect him , it affected the previous pitcher. The whole thing sucks. This game sucks. I might not play anymore (yeah, right)

You're right, plaw. I retract my previous statement.
From the Official Rules of MLB:
(i) When pitchers are changed during an inning, the relief pitcher shall not have the benefit of previous chances for outs not accepted in determining earned runs. NOTE: It is the intent of this rule to charge relief pitchers with earned runs for which they are solely responsible. In some instances, runs charged as earned against the relief pitcher can be charged as unearned against the team. EXAMPLES: (1) With two out, P1 walks A. B reaches base on an error. P2 relieves P1. C hits home run, scoring three runs. Charge two unearned runs to P1, one earned run to P2. (2) With two out, P1 walks A and B and is relieved by P2. C reaches base on an error. D hits home run, scoring four runs. Charge two unearned runs to P1, two unearned runs to P2. (3) With none out, P1 walks A. B reaches base on an error. P2 relieves P1. C hits home run, scoring three runs. D and E strike out. F reaches base on an error. G hits home run, scoring two runs. Charge two runs, one earned, to P1. Charge three runs, one earned, to P2.

You, DS (or "DB" if you prefer), are a numbers guy like me.
I'm sure you'd agree that this whole concept of "team unearned runs" is ridiculous. The run is either earned or it isn't. At the end of the season, everything should add up all nice and even (I think we had this conversation once before, also). It's like basketball. WTF is a "team rebound"?
Anyway, what I think we need to do about today is the following:
Take a vote (maybe I'll post a poll in another thread  ) among all the league members to decide whether or not we should "officially" deduct 9 points from everyone who had Oakland today. :p
I vote "YES". Everyone?

You guys sure would think differently had those unearned benefited YOU! :p Now stop whining - you can't change the rules...

Get rid of those vultured wins where the starter pitches his heart out, leaves with a 1-0 lead after 8, the "closer" blows the lead (and gets credit for a "blown save"), and then picks up the win when his team scores a run. So he winds up with a positive after doing something negative. And here's my save rule. Nice and simple. To get credit for a save, the relief pitcher has to face the tying or winning run. And it can't be the tying or winning run because of runners that he put on base. Holds? A completely ridiculous stat.

Originally posted by J Geoff: You guys sure would think differently had those unearned benefited YOU I agree. As twisted as these rules seem to be some times, at least it is consistent for everyone. I can remember seeing an opponent's team getting buku points and the score would totally belie the points due to the earned/unearned factor. I hate this game. If I don't quit, I may not play next year. :p

Look at you Bigalow just cleaning up and making everything tidy already... I have the Mets game to look forward tonight  . I already know that one of my OH-ffensive guys is not playing...too bad I found out today when it was too late... ....my guy who does so well for me, Jason Phillips is out on "personal" business....hmmmm. He sure didn't clear that with me. And then add that too trading my A-Rod last night for a TejadaO-fer today - wow, my offense stinks! EDIT: The DoucheMan has Phillips too, ouch.

Can't he take paternity leave in October? The kid will not be THAT old . How many days does he really need, been 3 already? btw: Thanks for sharing. After I read that I DID remember them talking last game about his pregnant wife. They should not allow MLB players to be married. Would make for easier stalking.....
