Rant Alert!

3 runs for Detroit. All unearned.

Two out, nobody on. Guy reaches on a throwing error by Tejeda. Next guy walks. Then a three run homer. All runs unearned.

Makes no sense (yeah, I know we've been through this before, but this is a rant, remember?).

The run that scored because of the error...OK, not the pitcher's fault. Call it unearned. But the walk and the homer? The pitcher gave those up. Those runs should be earned.

I know the logic. If not for the error, pitcher would have been out of the inning. Yeah, but he still gave up the walk and the homer. That was all his doing.

And those two guys would have batted next inning if not for the error. Who's to say what the result would have been? By calling the runs unearned, it's as if (for ERA purposes, anyway) those two ABs never happened.

Here's a question: Same situation as above. The A's take out Zito after the three-run homer. New pitcher comes in. Two out, nobody on. He proceeds to give up more runs. Are those earned or unearned?
