Ok, I got a question. Can I sign up now and join this group now? Would they start to add up my points, or would it sit at 0 until the All-Star break?

I'm gonna have bloodhot eyes tomorrow, Geoff.

JJ - You can sign up now... but it's probably too late to pick a roster for Thursday. But, tomorrow, you can pick a roster for Friday and you'll be in it... take a few days to figure it out, see how it works... ask questions... etc... no problemo... I'd probably spend an hour or so reading all 25pp of this thread to see what's going on, but it's not necessarily...

G.M. Lawrence Pulls Trigger On Deal

In a late Night move this morning, BLACK CAR DRIVERS General Manager Paul Lawrence traded his entire pitching staff from the Florida Marlins for the staff of the Chicago Cubs.

Completing the deal just moments before the 3:00 AM trading deadline, Lawrence, who had gotten up to pee and decided to check the previous nights box scores before going back to bed, is having a rough spring in his first season as GM of a fantasy league team.

"I didn't realize the importance of pitching" Lawrence, a baseball fan for more than 40 years, said sheepishly. "And when I found out I could have the Cubs staff for the same price I was paying for the Marlins, the deal became a no brainer"

The DRIVERS, who are in danger of sinking into the cellar in the GANGSTER BBC League, are widely regarded as having one of the best offenses in the league.
Oh, what 2 months could do

JG: The above's a good one . My original thought was Burnett & Beckett. Of course, that was before I realized that the way to play was to pick a different PS every day. I sure picked the wrong one yesterday
As far as the BVSP goes; Yeah, it was always one click away, but from the looks of the picks, not too many players here were clicking on it. To me, they're just "dumbing down" the game, just like they did when the added the column to show the player's average points for the last 7 days, as well as the season. Shouldn't the participants in the game be figuring out who's hot and who's not? Just my opinion.

joltinjoe: Welcome to the game. While it's true you're getting a late start, it shouldn't be too long before you at least pass BDD.

I remember your first post, I think. About Creamer's DiMaggio book, wasn't it? Your wicked sense of humor has been a sometimes breath of fresh air on these boards, and I wish you the very best of luck in this game.

As a matter of fact, to help you along, here are my Top Ten Tips For Doing Well At Fantasy Baseball (apologies to David Letterman):

10) Try to pick a pitching staff that's going at Coors Field. It's a good pitcher's park.
9) Platooning is way over-rated. Pay no attention to lefty-righty matchups.
8) Offensive players usually do well at Dodger Stadium.
7) Catchers and DHs usually play every day, so try to pick good ones and stick with them forever.
6) Load up on offense, and pick the cheapest pitching staff you can.
5) The Mets are starting to come around. Roberto Alomar and Rey Sanchez should start to get hot.
4) Even though Mike Piazza and Mo Vaughan are on the DL, if you pick them up now they'll be a lot cheaper than when they come back.
3) Don't worry if the team you pick is over the salary cap. Nobody cares about that, anyway.
2) Guys with very few at bats for the season are probably good picks, since they might be "due".
1) How you "Trash Talk" is the most important thing here. That's really what this whole thing is all about. No one cares how well or poorly they do in the game.

So you think you're gonna bring me down, huh? Not in this lifetime, Bro'. :p

Plaw, you forgot the single most important rule in this whole game:

#0- Try to pick whomever you think Pork and Bad Daddy (umm) I mean Big Daddy will pick. Their karma will never, ever steer you wrong! :p

Just noticed... Congrats BDD on getting out of 9th place. You are now tied with SC for 8th place, but still in last may I add. Don't worry though- once JJ joins, you'll be out of the cellar! :p

Plawrence, thanks for the nice words. My first post was actually "Hello everyone." But the Cramer book was soon after. I still haven't read the newer one. But I plan on reading that sometime this summer.

Thanks for the tips Plaw. Now I know I'm gonna rock this league. My first pick is going to be either Mark McGwire or Jose Canseco. Good homerun hitters.

Thanks DB!! But I don't understand. You mean 3 points for 2 games is not good?? :p

PL - Have to admit, your top 10 was funny. Will that be the prologue in your book?

I know BethE voyeurs in this thread because she is really a wannabe fantasy player, however with no guts to get in the game. Maybe football season??? Bethie, if you are reading this....Plaw's list was TOTALLY for fun. DO NOT take notes on that. Remember, we talked about what Coors and Wood were. Stick with me and don't let these big guys scare you. Second place DOES seem to be my middle name. Even with the shitty choices I have made this week, I'm still hanging in there ahead of the other scrubs.

Yes, I now believe PL's #10 rule IS the most important rule....

First, go here . If you're already a registered ESPN user, log in. If not, click on "register for a free account" and follow the instructions. Then go back to the Baseball Challenge (BBC) home page and log in.

If it's your first time logging in, it'll ask you to pick your roster. Do this, following the instructions, and keeping your budget at or below 50.

When that's done, you're playing. To join the group, click on "Group Directory" -- you want the Private group called "GangsterBBC" -- the password is "puzoparty" ...

Please, only people willing to actually play (novice or expert, doesn't matter) -- I don't want to fill the room up with non-players...

Grazie,

JG

PS Where's LDV?!

Yeah, I thought long and hard about that one. In the end, I decided to go with the hot pitcher at the low price. But it wouldn't surprise me if he gets killed.

What were the condolences to Buffy for?

Players,
may I ask when the 2nd half of this league starts? Does the first half end at the allstar break? Can others join for the 2nd half?

You can definitely join now- actually you should start now to get some practice in if you want to play in the 2nd game (which starts after the all-star break I believe). By then, the seasoned vets- most particularly plaw- won't be willing to help!

Funny how this thread follows the same pattern almost every day.

JG posts the day's unofficial results around 2:00 AM.
I wake up around 5:30 AM, and stick in my two cents about the day before.
LDV makes her comments about 10:00 AM Eastern, and the fur really starts to fly for about an hour. That's trash talkin' time. (This morning we had 17 posts, I think, between about 10-11.)
Then if there are no day games, it stays quiet until the night games start, when we all rough it up again, altho not as much as during that 10-11 AM time slot.
And then it starts all over again.

Yea Plaw, except now since the new guy is here (that's me) you guys need to set up in hour each day in which you complain to Geoff that "we already had nine people. Why did we want JJ? He's way to tough for us. I think he's Peter Gammons."

We'll call it - The Excuse Hour.

(no, not very original, but its hard thinking of something that rhymes with 'excuse' )

How often are baseball games played over there? My teacher in junior (middle) school was a great fan of it, and we used to play it in PE (much better than rounders!). I'd still follow, but it's only shown over here after midnight.

Pretty much everyday Mick. There's usually around 10 games being played.
Sometimes, though, there's a day where maybe only two games are played. It all pretty much varies.

If you're talking about a baseball season including the playoffs, it goes til October. Around middle-late October is the real championship games, The World Series. Whoever wins that is the Champ.

Yes Plaw, you are a brilliant man, you've got us all pegged.

10 am ET. That is 8 am my time when I get to my desk in the morning. Kind of tough when I am up past midnight making my final picks after the games end. Then winding down time, yep I am in bed about 1:30. Since I work alone and basically answer to noone, I check baseball stuff before I even do anything else.

I am personally grateful to JG for posting the numbers so I dont have to on my own anymore. I'll do my part to say thanks ..I'll bring in bagels tomorrow morning for the whole crew.

Welcome to the game JJ05. 10 is a nice round number to play with. Coo-coo-coo-Chooo!
