Well all I know is that the gangs you will meet early on are probably pretty much all black/hispanic and that means your probably not gonna have much fun early on. Some features are that members of your own gang will help and fight with you against rival gangs (i.e. 4 person drivebys). Also, members of allied gangs will assist you if you are under attack from rival gangs. This particular feature excites me quite a bit.
