Do the people in this picture look a little too calm?

What? You mean why the waiter is calmly looking down? He's just wondering if he'll be able to have McCluskey's veal.

Well, by the picture, Sollozo is dead, McCluskey, perhaps at his last breath, and Michael, well, his whole demeanor, if you recall is "calm". He simply stood up and shot.

As for the waiter, looks like his eyes are closed (perhaps in fear?).

To be honest, if I hadn't seen the picture just now, I wouldn't have remember the waiter standing right by the table. Good picture though. That's one of my favorite scenes.

I guess that the woman in the background was not an actress in the movie, but someone in the restaurant who must have been told to continue having dinner when they were shooting this scene. She must have got distracted and looked around to see what's happening in the scene.

I think the customers were temporarily paralyzed by fear.

If I recall correctly, the patrons get up and shuffle quickly to the back of the restaurant. They are probably fearing that they will be next.

No, the customers didnt even notice the shooting. Remember this is a place where everyone minds their own business. Also they were probably rapt by experiencing the taste of the best veal in the city.

unless the veal was seasoned with anesthetics, the customers should have heard the shooting, though!

They are 'extras'.

Pain-in-the-ass innocent bystanders.

We're not supposed to be concentrating on them; they were not meant to be the main focus of the scene.

Michael shoulda had a couple of more glasses of wine to calm him down. It would have also made them less suspicious when he had to go to the bathroom....I wonder if Louis salvaged that bottle and served it in a carafe to other customers, or merely used it as a marinade for the best veal in the city.
