This isn't news. David Chase has been saying all along that Sopranos will end after this (and sometimes last) season-- maybe. I think this is partly his own eccentricity, partly a need to make people yearn for more "Sopranos," although I think he's shot himself in the foot this time by waiting so long for the next (final?) season debut. What's new here is that the article says he's going to retire to the South of France to write a book. I'm constantly reading in Paris Match that one Anglo celebrity after another is buying property there. The latest, I think, is the réalisateur, David Lynch. He gave a nice interview in Paris Match in which he said he valued French audiences because they were more "discerning." "Really?" asked the interviewer. "I don't know a single Frenchman who made sense of 'Mulholland Drive.' " "Alors," said Lynch, "my films aren't supposed to be obvious."
