Well yeah, besides their hair, eyes, nose, eyebrows, general facial structure, some vocal mannerisms, body build, etc.. hardly anything at all.

You're not going to get somebody who looks *exactly* like Al Pacino -- FFC didnt' worry that Robert DeNiro didn't look *exactly* like a younger Marlon Brando. There was a general resemblance, enough so that you could accept the idea that this was Vito at a younger age.

The main thing was, DeNiro could *play the character.* That's all you need for casting requirements.

I think a key is finding people who are already somewhat known, so they have a persona that might fit the character, but are not considered "superstars" so their own public image would overshadow the character altogether.

Therefore, no Tom Cruise playing Michael Corleone. No Madonna playing Kay Adams.

Franco seems too thin and rangy in my estimation for Sonny. You need someone who looks like a street brawler, ready to throw down at the slightest provocation.

Edward Norton might make a good Fredo. He's got the semi-nerd look that Fredo needs. Jude Law might be a possibility too. But since Fredo is not going to be a pivotal character, you probably will end up with somebody lesser-known to play the role.

"You did good."
