Well, I've got to break my vow and respond to this question.

Just because Tom himself hadn't "...said anything to mama...", doesn't mean she didn't hear the news of Santino's death from someone else. With Sonny gone, Tom was in the position as temporary head of the house. It probably fell on his shoulders alone to break it to the still recovering Vito and all other family members, including Mrs. Corleone, stayed out of his room until The Don himself came downstairs to find out what was going on.
