I, too, dislike the idea of a GFIV and think that they should let legends be since both Puzo and Nino Rota (the guy who created the great theme which touches me everytime the movie is on) are both no longer part of this project. well guys, i may be the only one to say this, but im actually hoping the make a godfather IV. it may sound stupid as i am a realist and understand that the odds of them making something as special as 1 or 2, or even 3 is not so good. but i mean just to be able to have hope that they can still create a masterpiece is there for me. it's just a feeling i get when i think of the idea of having robert de niro, andy garcia, and other possible great actors in this next movie under the guidence of a legendary director. the possibilities are endless. like i say it's just hope, a dream if i may call it that. but it's there. i hope no one will think im nuts.

There is a big gap between the time middle aged Vito kills Don Ciccio and the Connie wedding. What about the time before Don Ciccio and the Genco Olive Oil sign scene. We know there was a war with the Maranzano organization, the Capone goons who Luca killed so violently. Sonny as a teenager going to work for the Don after he tells him he saw him murder Fanucci. The Irish gang incident where the Don is shot. Michael finnally putting to rest any worries concerning his manhood. The Don and Luca getting Johhnny's contract back from the band leader. Clemenza taking Sonny under his wing and teaching him how to kill. Earlier Sonny finding a destitute Tom Hagen as a half blind street urchin. The family move to Long Island. A workable script could be written, but alas all the characters as we know them would have to be recast and that would never work. As far as a movie of post Michael involving Vincent is a real longshot.

wil. If FFC directs it, I wonder who he would have replace Vito then...since both DeNiro and Brando are too old/different to play the part of older-but-not-middle-aged Vito... I think another Vito would be a mistake...or another Michael...

Like I said "Alas we would have to recast" I agree, a new Michael or Don Vito would be, well, how about "Criminal"?

If, the 4th installment in the Godfather saga could be produced to the same high production values and casting values of I & II, then #IV would be worth making, and worth seeing, and would be a compliment the others.
But what are the obvious pitfalls to making another installment now:
1. The level of graphic gore is rising on television. It seems there's this competition to see who can be the first network to splatter the most blood. There's a real art to showing violence without so grossing or shocking your audience that it detracts from the movie-going experience. With the current trend, how can a "gangster" film not "go for the gore"? ? ? Just look at the progression from the excellent 5-Star thriller SILENCE OF THE LAMBS tumbling down to it's sequel HANNIBAL, a "hip" and "trendy" gore-fest that is but merely a 2-Star outing. Who can hold the line against these powerful market forces ? ? ? 2. Casting. If we follow the example of what we got with III, then whomever won't come back onboard is speedily written out of the story, no matter how helpful they would have been to the overall telling of the saga. And then, when others not so important say "Hey, I'm available", well then they're written in to the story, when maybe they shouldn't be there at all. Yeah, that's what I see happening, all over again. 3. I think it would take a miracle to get it right now. The Studios aren't committed to making any real Classics anymore. "Just make it with OUR values......and we'll milk it for all it's worth.....fist in the theaters, then pay-per-view, then cable. Oh, we've got those DVD releases down to an art now, what with all the SE, Director's Cut and Box sets available! !" Yeah, there's the real "art" in Holywood these days -- Marketing clunkers, for all they're worth ! !

I am not favoring the idea of making a part IV movie, however the book doesn't seem as bad an idea. The movie would have too many problems with casting, studio work, stroyline, etc.; the whole thing is just too much of a gamble. Why mess with something that is already perfect? Since Mario Puzo is no longer with us (may he rest in peace), Coppola should have the only saying as to what the book should cover, if/when it ever comes out.

I agree a book is in order, perhaphs a good "audio" book, but this time in the higher storage format than a mere CD. A double density CD Rom or DVD ROM please ! !

i dont want part 4 to come out because i would have to buy a new boxset plus puzo and coppela wont be working on it so it would probably suck anyway.

I am very much against GF4. There must be a way to keep it from happening. I sincerely believe that FFC would never do this, but who knows? Anyone ever visit his web site? It's pretty cool. Some good stuff there. http://www.niebaum-coppola.com Maybe we could somehow put a stop to this. Let us keep Mario from rolling in his grave. Let him RIP. I have mixed emotions about the book, though. Not sure what to think. I guess I will just have to wait for it and see.
