The business which created the maffia was also a reason. The maffia originated from corruption with the citrus-industry on Sicily. Sicily was back then the biggest citrus-fruit exporter of the whole world, and the USA were the biggest importer. I guess the maffiosi wanted to be on both ends of the trading connection, in order to have more controle over it.
