1. The most powerful bosses of the Genovese Family were Vito Genovese's two predecessors: Charlie Luciano and Frank Costello. Luciano formed the Commission and became the de-facto Capo di Tutti Capi until he was convicted of Mann Act (white slavery) violations in 1936, sent to prison and exiled. Frank Costello, imo the most successful and powerful Don in NYC history, ruled from 1946 to 1957, when he was wounded on Genovese's orders and retired. You'd think Vito Genovese would be the most powerful because he forced Costello's retirement. But Genovese's reign was short-lived: he was set up in a drug deal in 1959 and sent to the Atlanta Federal prison, where he died. 2. I believe you're thinking of Angelo Bruno, the "gentle Don" of Philadelphia, who had ties to the Genovese and Gambino families. But he wasn't whacked by NY families. He was whacked by his own consigliere after he declared Atlantic City an "open city" to prevent a Mob war. He was actually protected by the Genovese and Gambino Families earlier, and Carlo Gambino was responsible for his becoming Don of Philadelphia in 1959. 3. Valachi claimed that Vito Genovese gave him the "kiss of death" when they were in the Atlanta pen together. He then became paranoid, and bludgeoned to death another prisoner whom he thought was on a mission to kill him. Did Genovese really give him the deathkiss? I don't know. Valachi may have started singing because he realized that he'd killed the wrong man, and saw singing as a way to avoid the death penalty and get better treatment. Again: who knows? 4. The Chin certainly did walk the streets of Greenwich Village in New York in his pajamas, talking to trees, being led about by underlings, etc. He was successful enough in this ruse to avoid being tried under the same RICO full-court press that sent three of his fellow Dons away for life. But, as you probably know, he recently was declared compos mentis by a judge, sent to jail, and even more recently, pleaded guilty to having faked non compos mentis, which helped keep his current sentence manageable. The good news for him is that he succeeded in not being sent away for 99+ years. The bad news is that, despite his humiliating sham, he's gonna die in jail anyway.

As far as the genovese family goes, they are right now the biggest and most successful of the 5 families in NEW-YORK.They have ties to the philly area, jersey, pittsburgh and cleveland, they have infiltrated casinos'in california and nevada, vincent gigante still has the power,he controls the faction from his federal lock down in texas.he is a ruthless killer,he inserts cash into his victims body cavaties which means they were greedy.gigante ordered the hit on frank decicco,a gambino power, blowing up his car,a no no in the mob world.DON VITO GENOVESE was not around long enough to make a impact on the family, even though it is named after him. Valachi was a piece of shit,he flipped after screwing up a drug deal,he was gonna be whacked, all the stories about this rat bastard and his snitching amounted to 0 arrests. ANGELO BRUNO ran philly at the request of the 5 families, his soft personality allowed the families to cut into his pie so to speak, the gambinos had the drug action in jersey while the genovese ran the SHY and gambling operations, while they were both happy this did not sit well w/tony caponigro{tony bananas}so he killed angelo, what he did not do was get sanctioned approval from the commison, one person in particular,BOBBY MANNA,genovese counsel, one of the most powerful genovese ever, manna and boss frankie terri had tony killed, they found him w/ 2 dozen bullet holes and wads of cash stuck abruptly into tonys'orfices, the philly faction has never been the same since angelos killing.

Originally posted by Boss_of_bosses: Turnbull? I did read about Lansky, Costello, Luciano and Gambino's plan to have Vito Genevese set up for drugs so that he can go away for life. This was because they didn't like Genevese's ambition to be the Supreme Mob boss of all USA. And they didn't like the fact that he embraced the narcotics industry. What if this plan of their's backfired? I mean Vito Genevese might have ratted them all out to save his own skin. Well, BofB, "what-if" is always the issue in organized crime--the whole damn business is so risky! I guess that Lansky and Costello--and especially Luciano, who brought Genovese along--knew their man. They guessed, correctly, that Genovese was too ambitious, too greedy, to pass up the deal offered by Nelson Cantellops that they had set up. Another factor that I'm sure you read about: Genovese had killed his wife's first husband so he could marry her. But, according to some sources, she was tough, independent (and bisexual, according to some accounts), and she talked against him with impunity. Some say she helped send him away. This gets to a theme that's repeated constantly in this particular board: being a Don, which we tend to romanticize here, is actually just about the riskiest thing a criminal can aspire to. There's no honor among thieves. And the higher you go, the more people are gunning for you--and the harder you fall. A major subtheme in the GF Trilogy is how the top guys, including Michael and Vito, could never trust anyone, could never be free of doubts, even about those closest to them.

I understand its natural,I just nit pick on that last name,it's personal. DO not always believe what you read about on o.c. Every one thinks they are an expert, for any amount of money some mook will write a book and make millions, sammy gravano, valachi, jerry capeci, who by the way is the worst,I think he makes stuff up as he goes,he has no clue, even the fbi book boss of bosses has some very blatent lies, it's all a game of numbers, big numbers, cash. THE worst is of course henry hill, the whole book was a lie,he was a rat fink irish snitch, he was high on coke and he was sucking dick and doing blow all the time.
