The Bonannos lost their seat on the Commission around 1964. It had nothing to do with drugs. What happened was that Joe Magliocco, successor to Joe Profaci (later the Columbo Family) and Joe Bonanno's closest ally, plotted to kill Tommy Lucchese and Carlo Gambino. This plot was found out. The Commission (which then included Joe's cousin Stefano Magaddino, the Don of Buffalo who was jealous of Joe) demanded that Joe appear before them and explain himself. Joe regarded that as an affront to his autonomy. So the Commission, at Magaddino's urging, voted to depose him as Don and install Gaspare DiGregorio, his second-in-command, best man at Joe's wedding and, incidentally, Magaddino's brother in law. This move precipitated Joe's lengthy disappearance as well as the "Bananna Wars," which resulted in Joe's retirement and son Bill's imprisonment on mail fraud charges.
I don't know if any of Joe Bonanno's successors ever got the family seat back on the Commission. Carmine Galante, the most forceful of Joe's many successors, definitely dealt drugs. But I also think Joe and Bill did, too. Joe denied it, and said that Galante was dealing drugs behind his back. I doubt he could have done so without the Don knowing it (and taking his cut).
This is a (very) long way of saying that one of the hoariest Mob myths is that they "disapprove of" or "oppose" drugs. B.S.!
Turnbull in relation to what you posted. Didn't someone who was aware of the plot to kill Carlo Gambino, and Tommy Lucchese. Inform them about it?

I heard somewhere that's what happened.
