I have a question about the Bonanno family being on the Comission. I just got done reading Underboss by Sammy Gravano and he talks about how the Bonanno family didnt have a seat on the comission because the dealt drugs so much. But before i read that, I read Bound By Honor by Bill Bonanno and he never brings this up and he constantly says how he and his father were against drugs. Now I can see how people could deal it behind their backs, but I think Joe and Bill Bonanno would have to be approving it if it went so far as to get their seat taken of the Comission taken away.
I buy you out. You don't buy me out.

The Bonannos lost their seat on the Commission around 1964. It had nothing to do with drugs. What happened was that Joe Magliocco, successor to Joe Profaci (later the Columbo Family) and Joe Bonanno's closest ally, plotted to kill Tommy Lucchese and Carlo Gambino. This plot was found out. The Commission (which then included Joe's cousin Stefano Magaddino, the Don of Buffalo who was jealous of Joe) demanded that Joe appear before them and explain himself. Joe regarded that as an affront to his autonomy. So the Commission, at Magaddino's urging, voted to depose him as Don and install Gaspare DiGregorio, his second-in-command, best man at Joe's wedding and, incidentally, Magaddino's brother in law. This move precipitated Joe's lengthy disappearance as well as the "Bananna Wars," which resulted in Joe's retirement and son Bill's imprisonment on mail fraud charges. I don't know if any of Joe Bonanno's successors ever got the family seat back on the Commission. Carmine Galante, the most forceful of Joe's many successors, definitely dealt drugs. But I also think Joe and Bill did, too. Joe denied it, and said that Galante was dealing drugs behind his back. I doubt he could have done so without the Don knowing it (and taking his cut). This is a (very) long way of saying that one of the hoariest Mob myths is that they "disapprove of" or "oppose" drugs. B.S.!

It appears that the Bonanno family did regain it's seat on the commission thanks to their current boss, Joe Massino. According to an old ganglandnews.com article, Massino not only attended the last known commission meeting, but hosted it! Massino was able to stay out of prison since being released in '92 by using some unusual tactics to run things (his brother in law and underboss turned rat not too long ago, so I doubt he will be a free man for much longer). I read reports a while back that Massino would often frustrate the FBI by leaving the country (his usual destinations were Mexico and Italy) when he wanted to talk business with his guys. Anyway, I highly recommend reading this article on gangland.com, which named Mossino the "Mafia Chieftain of the Millenium." http://www.ganglandnews.com/column308.htm

Didn't someone who was aware of the plot to kill Carlo Gambino, and Tommy Lucchese. Inform them about it? I heard somewhere that's what happened.

I heard somewhere that's what happened. You're right, Iceman! Magliocco asked Bill Bonanno to drive him to a Long Island railroad station to meet with a guy he trusted. The man was giving him info on the status of Lucchese and Gambino. This guy was close to Joe Columbo, who was then in Magliocco's family. Columbo betrayed this info to the Commission. Magliocco died of a heart attack soon afterward. Columbo became head of the Magliocco (formerly Profaci) family. Because Bill Bonanno had driven Magliocco to this fatal meeting, the commission assumed he was involved, and blamed his father for being part of the plot. That lead to the commission's demand that Bonanno Sr. appear and explain himself, and the rest, as they say, is history. If you ever get a chance, rent "Honor Thy Father," a superior made-for-TV film on the Bananna Wars, starring Joseph Bologna, Brenda Vaccaro and the immortal Raf Vallone as Joe Sr.
