In my opinion it is a very intense scene, absolutely not unnecessary. Consider Apollonia is a Sicilian girl (presumably she's a virgin! blush ) back in the 40's, raised up in a very strict way, nevertheless from the intensity of her looks we are told she got a very passionate temper. When she shows her husband her breast she totally gives herself to Michael, in a most natural and genuine way, in my opinion much more erotic than if they showed us much more than her breast and a kiss. Unfortunately, we don't know much about Michael and Apollonia's relationship, even though Michael always remembers her with much love (in GF3) so I don' believe this scene is redundant.
