I wanted to start a thread on a related topic, but this one seems right, so here it goes: What was the necessity of this scene? It did not add any new description to the characters or advance the plot. With the movie being so long, why did FFC or any one not edit this one out? I mean I agree it is great to see apollonia's boobs, for that matter anyone's boobs, it is entertaining. But it is totally unnecessary for movie of such length. I am going to start a new thread on the possibility of editing out some redundant scenes, but till then I would like to know your opinions on this.

In my opinion it is a very intense scene, absolutely not unnecessary. Consider Apollonia is a Sicilian girl (presumably she's a virgin! ) back in the 40's, raised up in a very strict way, nevertheless from the intensity of her looks we are told she got a very passionate temper. When she shows her husband her breast she totally gives herself to Michael, in a most natural and genuine way, in my opinion much more erotic than if they showed us much more than her breast and a kiss. Unfortunately, we don't know much about Michael and Apollonia's relationship, even though Michael always remembers her with much love (in GF3) so I don' believe this scene is redundant.

I think this scene is strictly for character-relationship building (not to mention, sex sells). It consumates the marriage. It takes it to its natural peak. Now if there was a bed-humping scene then I'd say it went too far. FFC was showing the innocence, the physical matched with the emotional. It completes the bond between the characters and makes her death much more meaningful. Leaving that scene out would be like leaving all the shooting/murders out. We could surmise what happens, but seeing it completes the experience.

Well, I think that the scene where Mike kills Fabrizzio is much more necessary for the movie, for many reasons. Despite the length!

I agree with Mary Cas & Lavinia who worded it perfectly. Not only does it confirm, more or less, Apollonia's innocence and the consumation of the marriagr etc., but it also lets us see a softer, more gentler Michael. Is there any other scene in which he appears as "tender"?

As far as Apollonia's age goes, I think someone said that the laws were different in Italy than in the US as far as child pornography goes. I'm sure someone will recall.

A minor can show nudity in a film only if allowed by his/her parents ***and*** approved by a judge as not being gratuitous.

This was a problem the producers of American Beauty ran up against. Fortunately, the judge saw it their way.
