The made guys are always protected, but there are places within a family for non-Sicilian made guys who are big earners. One example that comes to mind is Ace Rothstein/Frank Rosenthal from "Casino" (DeNiro). He wasn't a made guy, but he was a helluva earner. Remo ordered Nicky (Pesci) to protect Ace. I don't remember the exact dialogue, but Nicky made several references to protecting "the Golden Jew." During a confrontation between Nicky & Ace, Nicky told Ace that if it wasn't for Nicky's protection, every criminal & gangster would be shaking Ace down.
