I got my surround sound system and it does blow you away. That armored truck robbery scene is also good.

Put in a director like Michael Mann, and it becomes a 3 hour epic about Los Angeles crime. The delightfull finishing touch by casting Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino who go head to head for the first time, made this cop-movie an Oscar nominee!!! What's more to say after that? By the way, neither Pacino nor DeNiro 'won' the massive clash of giants, not in my opinion at least, I can still not pick the better actor in this film.

It's funny you should say that Pherdy; De Niro is my second favourite actor (after Hackman), and IMO is better than Pacino. But on the one occasion where they appear head to head, I prefer Pacino. But the trouble with the casting was that I wanted De Niro to get away.
Despite the fairy-tale solution at the end, the film is a true epic, but not in the time-spanning scale of the likes of G'Fellas et al. It's cast is near-perfect.
The problem is that the key scene--the bank robbery--happens a good distance from the end, so it's overlong and dragged out, and IMO is unnecessary. It could be cut about forty minutes, and would stil be just as good.
I'd give it two stars out of four.

Mick is right, it is too long (he also gets away with a little remark about DeNiro's role in this movie, for it comes very close to a spoiler in which case I would have kicked his British ass ) I think there was realy no other ending possible than the final shot we got... and it makes it worthwile. This is, and always be, THE movie starring DeNiro and Pacino sharing a scene. That ought to be enough for a Godfather-board-member. I don't like the 4-star system, but if I'd rate it that way, I'd give it 2,5 stars

It's the single best movie ever made in my opinion- brilliant scripting, acting, cinematography, editing, everything. And how did it have a fairy tale ending? Would you prefer them to hug one another and sing "We are the world?"

Would you prefer them to hug one another and sing "We are the world?" Obviously not, as that would only make it even more fairy-tale solution-like. What I meant was SPOILERSthat for an almost three-hour long film that lets you get to know the two lead characters so well you become part of the film itself, it is all solved in a less-than-minute scene. Saying that, the handshake was much better than having a big lecture to one another. It just wouldn't have worked if that had happened. Mick

The final showdown was brief, and I think it was very appropriate...a drawn-out fight sequence would have been two cliched. Remember, they vowed to not hesitate when they saw each other. Though maybe deNiro did a bit...

This was a potentially great film that was bogged down by the fact that it tried to do too much. It tried too hard to be an epic.
Had the film focused only on DeNiro and Pacino, it could have been perfect. Lord knows, thier scene in the diner is! It shows the trademark calm of DeNiro and the trademark fervor of Pacino. Fantastic.
What bothered me about the film were little details such as the Val Kilmer storyline (which was ok, but should ahve been cut to allow more time for Bobby and Al), the random black driver storyline (the drama between him and his wife was unneccesary. His whole character was), and most importantly, Jon Voight's horrendous handlebar moutache!
I love the idea of showing two separate character arcs, going in different directions but focusing on one thing. Pacino is a great cop whos life is in shambles because of his dedication to the game. De Niro is a great thief who's life is starting to come together. The bad guy is doing well personally and the good guy is doing bad personally. Each is quite likeable, and there is a feeling that they are kindred souls who just took different paths. This makes for a great dynamic that these great actors feed off of.
Almost perfect.

Yeah. it's a damned good film, but not the best ever by a long shot. It's probably one of the best of it's genre, but I think the genre itself is limiting. Worth a watch, and probably a purchase.

The bank heist and chase is a great moment. I never bought Amy Brennaman's character (DeNiro's love interest) though. She was too naive. But the performance given by DeNiro & Pacino are definitely worth investing the time to watch this film. It's the first film in which they ever worked directly together. Remember in GF2 that they never were in any scenes together, for obvious reasons.

I own the DVD and it is one of my favourites. I thought this movie was great for 3 main reasons, the acting, the storyline and the 2 heist scenes. Great Cop Melo-Drama, takes place in L.A, which is a great place for a movie like this.... Amazing Heist Scenes, the Bank shootout is probably the greatest heist gone wrong scene in Hollywood History...lol
Pacino yells just a tad too much, De Niro has a solid performance, Kilmer plays a good supporting role...Portman as the kid was good too. Like HH said, the Black Driver storyline wasn't needed and it prolonged the movie. Which leads me to my only complaint I have of the movie, it's tooo long!
Other than that, great film. 4/5
