Nope.....I think if he TRIED to smile (in the show) his face would've cracked. The star (whose name I won't mention) played Ness in a VERY serious manner.
Looking back, that show really had a wonderful cast. Even though all the characters didn't appear in every episode, consider those "semi-regulars" in the cast:
Bruce Gordon as Frank Nitti
Neville Brand as Al Capone
Nehemiah Persoff as Jake Guzik
All three are/were wonderful character actors who were somewhat stereotyped into the gangster roles (ie. they were tough looking guys). Persoff, of late, changed his "image" and now appears as the voice of the father mouse in the "American Tail" series of animated movies.
Lets not forget the narrator in the show - Walter Winchell. For those too young to remember, Winchell was a famous newspaper columnist who befriended J. Edgar Hoover, then the Director of the F.B.I. It was Winchell (and Hoover) to whom "Lepke" Buchalter surrendered after Lucky Luciano and company suggested it would be in his best interests to do so. Winchell played his role in that surrender to the hilt (although he didn't do much) and was always reminding everyone of his importance. What a dickhead.
