It was excellent. One of the things I really enjoy in mob films are the supporting roles, and the actors and actresses who fill them. They were all terrific here, especially Sonny Black.
But I was unable to find Johnny Depp believable as an FBI agent. Even though he was undercover, he just didn't look the part. And he certainly didn't look Italian.

Deathkiss,
You are so right. That's part of the reason I liked the movie so much. This was a portrayal of a whole different level of organized crime. Pacino's performance was so poignant and pitiful. He was amazing as the wiseguy who'd been around forever and could never seem to move up in ranks. I thought Johnny Depp was very good too. I never would have thought him to play that sort of part but I think he pulled it off. Overshadowed by Pacino, but hey, that was expected.

One thing that made me think. Remember in Goodfellas when Henry goes "In order to become a member of a crew, you have to be 100 % italian and they must be able to trace all your relatives back to the old country" or something like that. Plus it took like 30 years for Tommy to almost get made.
But here, Donnie gets so quick...

No Doubt, Donnie Brasco's a very good film. It opened current gangsters eyes to 'fugazy' and still poses the BIG question: What's the better car, Cadillac or Lincoln?????

Very nice analogy, BK! I liked the movie, but the book was much better because it had more detail. Also, in the movie, Lefty looks like a bumbling jerk and loser, but "Brasco" has lots of affection for him. In the book, it's the reverse: Lefty is a decent earner, has clout in the family (he saves "Brasco" from being "claimed" by another made man), and is respected by the family hierarchy. But "Brasco" can't stand Lefty--thinks he's a whiner and a cheapskate. The book "Brasco" had the most respect for Sonny Black.

I think the most poignant scene is when Lefty had his heart set on opening up a club in Florida. It was to be his 'big break'. Then the carpet was swept from under him by a middle-level wise guy. This is another movie i need to see again. <...putting it on my list>
