Corey, while "Goodfellas" follows "Wiseguy" pretty closely, I found a major difference: Ray Liotta played Henry Hill almost as a "choir boy" at times--all bug-eyed about hanging with gangsters, trying to be helpful (as in trying to save Morrie from being whacked, or getting Sonny Bunz straightened out with Paulie), and being involved in violence only once (the guy in Tampa). In the book, Henry comes off as a far more unlikable character: dishonest with his friends, involved in more violence, abusing drugs and alcohol far more often than in the film. The book paints a more realistic picture of what happens to someone involved with "wiseguys" than does the film.
