DeNiro actually does commercial roles like "Meet the Parents" in order to work with Scorcese on darker but not necessarily plotless "art" films. Anyone from NY can dig Taxi Driver and if you're not, you can learn about society, the isolation of the soul of 'everyman' at one time or another, karma, the fickle nature of popularity, the press, political hogwash and many themes appropriate for coffee and discussion. Or you could watch 'Rambo' instead.

And like Alfred Hitchcock, Scorcese likes to surprize us and pop up in his own films.
