His total commitment to the part is one of the reasons that DeNiro's performance in "Raging Bull" is the best of his career, as intense as Brando's in "Streetcar." The other reason is that he is a great, great actor when he cares about a film, as he did for "Bull." He also gained plenty of weight to play Capone in "Untouchables," wore silk underwear from Sulka, as did Capone, and had his hair plucked out to simulate Capone's hair loss, rather than wear partial wigs. After "Raging Bull," I was all leaped up to see DeNiro as Capone in "Untouchables." Went to the theater on opening day. Was disappointed that he didn't get more on-screen time. But Sean Connery more than made up for that.
