The Corleone name is pronounced two ways in the trilogy, one where the e on the end silent and one where the e is pronounced.

Any concensus on which is the correct way to pronounce Corleone?

In correct (northern) Italian, it'd be pronounced "Core-lee-own-eee." But most Southern Italians in New York tend to drop the final "e," so it's "Core-lee-own."

Vye-toe Core lee an e

You would have thought his man, I forget his name grin , would have better prepped him blush

Actually I thought Geary did know how to pronounce it, but deliberatley did it wrong so people wouldn't make a connection with him and Michael. Remember later when he's in the office he pronounces it correctly. So I think that whole Anthony "Vye-toe Cor-lee-on" thing was for the public people. Notice that he also calls Kay Pat for a second before correcting himself.

Geary is a low life racist at the end of the day, and showed his arrogant views the second he got the chance. His pronunciation can be easily discounted from the running!

JO, I think you might have to use the wink emoticon to signify sarcasm since there is no emoticon to show such for those less perceptive. wink

Geary's front man.....??? Toinbuhl??

This has always been a particular pet peeve for me whenever I watch the movies.

I've always found it puzzling that there was never an agreed-upon way of pronouncing the family name! It seems to change from scene to scene, and the same character may say it differently throughout the film(s).

confused

You'd think that FFC would have dealt with this during production. That is, unless he was too preoccupied with other, more pressing matters. (Like keeping his job!)

I knew a family whose last name was Leone, and they pronounced it LEE OWN E. Following this pronounciation, if you add Cor to Leone, I would think it would be Core Lee Own E cool

It seems that the older group used Cor-leon-E, maybe the more "authentic" Italians - like in prt1 - but after the Don died, it's like they (Michael) and others started Cor-leon.
??

Ciao a tutti! I live in Switzerland and my mother language is italian...
The correct pronunciation in italian is COR-LEON-E, just like Calo and Fabrizio (The sicilian bodyguards) pronounce it. Also Bonasera pronounces it correct. (When he says: "For Justice, we must go to Don Corleone").

In English it becomes Core-lee-own.

When Senator Geary pronounces it correct (like a true Italian), it sounds very forced and it really sounds like an insult for an italian! In fact Geary do it out of contempt!
He only wants to "tease" Michael Corleone and italian people.

You might know who we are, but we know who you are...

Yes, Senator Geary was just trying to piss Mike off by mispronouncing the name. During filming, I wondered why he couldn't get it right, they did about 5 or 6 takes on that one, so I had to listen to him mispronounce it quite a few times, in several different ways.

For what it's worth, I think "Corleonee" is the correct pronounciation. I think Geary's pronounciation was, although correct, his emphasis, I think, was meant to be sarcastic and perhaps an ethnic slur, in a way.

His pronunciation during the meeting with Mike in his study, yes. I was referring to his intentional mis-pronunciation during the communion party, when he made the presentation and pronounced it "Cor-lee-on". That was just to needle Mike and show his contempt.

Don Vito himself, in the flashback scene with Signor Roberto, pronounces it "COR-lee-own".
