I don't think they should be compared. Their styles are nothing alike at all.

Having said that, I think I like Wes Anderson more, but Paul Thomas Anderson could prove to be a better filmmaker.

PTA hasn't released a film in four years. He is very inconsistent in stlye. "Hard Eight" (Sydney) was an excellent, low-key character-study, far different from what he would attempt in the future. "Boogie Nights" was brilliant, and one of my personal favorite films. I'll never get tired of it. I used to think "Magnolia" was the greatest film of the 90's, until I saw "Short Cuts", and explored the work of Altman. "Punch Drunk Love" was an odd film, but one I really enjoyed.

Wes Anderson seems to be getting more ambitious with his projects, but they aren't necessarily getting better. "Bottle Rocket" was a lot of fun, and a very innocent film. I can't decide which of his other three films I like more. Though unlike PTA, he seems to have more of a trademark quality about his films. "Rushmore" told the story of a troubled teen through the medium of theater; "The Royal Tenenbaums" told the story of a disfunctional family through the medium of a novel; and "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" was told through the medium of a documentary, yet it wasn't a mockumentary. His films are hard to define, but endlessly unique, and that is why I like him more.

Though PTA's next film sounds very promising.

How am I not myself?
