Then you are obviously not yet a parent.

If I am correct, those 'about to graduate' are still under the legal adult age, and therefore fall under the responsibility of their parents.

A parent should know the number of the school whether the child is 7 or 17.

I know you don't mean disrespect and neither do I. But if when your grandmother died your mother had not had access to the convenience of 'text messaging', she would've HAD to have reached you via calling the school. Someone would've been sent to your classroom to come get you and you would STILL have eventually ended up in the Principal's office, only to receive the bad news instead of having to give it and in turn be asked how you got it.
