I would suspect that the iceberg wasn't something people could simply sit or stand upon while awaiting rescue in the middle of the ocean.
If you haven't already, have your 7yr old see 'A Night To Remember' ... it's far more historically accurate than the schmaltzy Cameron movie. (except it doesn't depict the ship breaking in half since that wasn't confirmed in 1958)
