There is a 190-mile footpath across the north of England called the Coast to Coast. It runs from the Irish Sea to the North Sea, and crosses country containing small mountains, lakes, river valleys, and moorland, and many, many farm pastures. At decent intervals, there are villages and small towns containing comfortable pubs and B&B's.

I don't think there is a better vacation than walking this path.
