Forgot about Nirvana's Bleach. I keep thinking of it as a 1990 release.

No, not at all actually. Never really interested me. My brother is obsessed with them though, and from what I've heard, they're a poor man's wannabe Led Zeppelin.

Back in Black is definitely a great album, and they did have a few other good ones in the 80's, but eventually AC/DC got too repetitive. Their 70's/early 80's era is their best.

Nah.

Vercetti's right, AC/DC's been making the same song for 25 years, but still, they're awesome.

Forgot to add my honourable mentions:

Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Green Day, Guns 'N Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Bif Naked (I'm in love with her so I had to add her to this list ), Oasis, Carlos Santana and U2. Oh yeah and Pearl Jam.

Sure there were lots of bands that I wanted to include on the list but the criteria was for (5) bands (last century) to represent (all of music on Earth) now of course each of our lists will be limited to what we have heard. That of course will be limited by our geography, socio-economics, and general culture.
I’m not trying to attack any ones list but there are sections of music that I don’t see represented, sections I know you know about but just aren’t fans of. Like in my list I tried to include a country and a techno artist – two types of music that I am not particularly fond of (in fact I generally hate most techno hence my cop-out of NIN) but these are sections of the “music” that I do know of. There are clubs world wide blaring out all kinds of House, Hard House, Jungle, Bass and Drum, blah, blah, blah techno music. It is a major element in music and almost no one has mentioned it. Same with rap, at least here in America there is probably not one facet of our culture that has not been touched by the culture and style that has grown out of Hip-Hop. Yet there are several Americans whose lists just ignore this fact like neither of these has been a force in the last hundred years…or maybe I’m just misunderstanding the question.

Not at all.

I don't know about people's personal definitions, but when I originally posed the question, I intended for people to think outside of the box a little bit and try to avoid simply making a list of their favoraite artists. Not that I wanted to make it a numbers thing and simply go by sales figures or anything, but I don't feel like you were misinterpreting anything.

Although as far as rap, country, and techno go, I have to agree that artists in these genres don't really belong on the lists. The fundamental reason is this; the fact that so few members here chose not to include techno, rap, and country artists exemplifies the truth that their fame is not widespread, as I consider the votes here to somewhat be an indicator of the voice of the masses. Yes, they may be very popular in their respective areas, but if they don't appeal to a wide audience, I don't feel like they belong on this list.

I dream in widescreen.

Doesn’t appeal to a wide audience? Rap and Techno? Yeah, I mean pretty much EVERY CLUB IN THE WORLD is I suppose a SMALL section of the population?

No I think that the lack of inclusion is more of a testament to the age and interests of a majority of the posters. I can’t believe you could say that rap, techno, and country aren’t that popular with a strait face. I suppose you think that Spanish-language music isn’t that popular either even though the Spanish language is one of the most populous languages in the world. We don’t have many listed simply because of a lack of popularity not a lack of Spanish speaking posters?

Come on, Capo.

This thread is pretty open and shut. It's a best music thread. Go out of the US pop range if you like, but don't start saying some of the best music has never been recorded. You don't need to delve that deep into every subject.
Fair enough, Ferro. I see your point, ish. But in order for a film to exist, it must be made. What we're questioning here is what music is the best on Earth that has been recorded. Music is much more immediate than that; it can be created essentially by banging two things together. And nobody ever hears it. But I see your point, in the scope of this thread.

O, how pretentious I am. :p

You consider this message board representative of society in general?

And what are we judging here? Best or most popular?

I don't mean to start a fight or flame-war, and hope no one takes it as such. But, I think the idea of representing music through fame, or popularity, or whatever, is pure bull-shit. It's kind of like saying, "Yeah, The Beatles; they'd be nothing without matching suits and cool accents!" And, I think this is why we can all agree, the 1980s were basically musical purgatory. It seemed like anyone who had star appeal or glamour was sure to succeed. And that brings upon the whole popularity aspect, and that's why I think the 90s called for an underground scene like grunge and alternatice... But then that was taken away too, and became a mainstream side-show. If you did happen to like to music of the 80s, I'm sorry to offend you. And I'm sorry you've got bad taste in music (only kidding).

I don't know. It's just something about this thread that bothers me. I wouldn't say a pop act like Madonna or Michael Jackson would be a good representation in music... Not because they aren't talented. They're very talented in what they do, but I just feel bubble-gum pop is the exact opposite of "music" in the traditional sense. The people with their names on the album covers don't write the songs, and the actual music itself just seems like it was pushed off, and those involved in the record's birth viewed it as secondary to the straight-forward lyrics. It just kind of sucks the art out of it, until it becomes a circus act. I'm sure there are exceptions to this rule... or, this idea. But, I think this is why bubble-gum pop has never settled with my blood; no, I'm not just being a typical immature teen-aged rock-fan who enjoys saying "liek OMG!!! DAT IS GHET! PUNK RAWK! IM A REBBEL BCUZ I DYED MY HAIR WITH GREEN SPRAY-ON HAIR COLOR!!!! LOL!!21@!@!!!!"

I don't know. I feel like this is going to come off as if I'm a hostile beast of a man, and someone has been feeding me booze and LSD, before locking me into the confines of a small room, with the lights out--the darkness only broken by the gleaming light of a computer moniter. But I hope it doesn't. I just don't think music should be represented by fame, or iconic figures, or popularity. Sure, inspiration, yes. But what ever happened to the music?
I don't have much to add, I think I completely agree with your view here.

Sonic Youth, Pixies, and The Smiths definitely belong on this list. In fact, all 3 of those bands are better than every artist you mentioned, except maybe Tom Waits.
Sonic Youth is great. I'm 99.5% positive there was a Radiohead/Sonic Youth tour at some point... If only I had been into them at that point in time.

Pixies are excellent as well... I thought about it recently, and the 90s could be the best decade for rock music yet. The only period that could come close (and may actually be better in my mind, I haven't really decided yet) would be the 70s... The 60s were great, but the early 60s weren't much compared to the 70s in general.

I mainly regard this towards Vercetti and DVC, but anyone can speak up to this one; but do we have any Screaming Tree fans on the board? I think they're absolutely spectacular, and perhaps one of the most under-rated bands of the 80s/90s. Their mix of classic rock and grunge is absolutely amazing... The guitar-work itself reminds me of a grungified Grateful Dead.

Screaming Tires are good. Not my favorite but they're good. What do you think of Mudhoney, LLC? They're also pretty good. "If I Think" is one of their songs I love.
