Editing for Crash won, so I think they must've somehow thought that it was a better film, not because of its theme but because of the overall film techniques.

As for how they came up with this idea, Three 6 Mafia won an Oscar, enough said.

BTW, I haven't watched either of the two, so I can't give my personal opinion.
