The "Queen Mother" was the mother of the current Queen. She died a couple of years ago aged 102. When George VI died, his daughter Elizabeth became Queen. However her mother was still entitled to call herself "Queen" as well. Since they were both called Elizabeth, they came up with the title the "Queen Mother" to avoid confusion.
