I have the Philly room booked, but have not yet booked my flight. From all the research I've done, I can conclude that I will arrive in Philly Friday sometime between 5:20 & 6:20 p.m., at the earliest (assuming flight is on time). I don't know how far the airport is from the hotel (although I think it was posted). So I'm guessing at the earliest mayble I'll be at the hotel between 6:30-7:30. Does that sound about right for those who know the distance? So, if it's too late for dinner, you guys go ahead and eat, and don't feel you need to wait for me. I don't want to hang you all up. As far as Shula's or Moshulu's I don't care, but I would like to see Moshulu's, if not for just a drink, since it is GF related. However, whatever you guys want to do I'll go along with. DMC, it's a written law that those who are 21 buy everyone else drinks...everyday....all weekend. They also carry their luggage, wash their cars and run their errands. :p TIS

From the neighborhood where I grew up, it was always a tradition that when someone from the group turned 21, they had to buy drinks all night long. So Mr. DMC, I suggest that you start saving your pennies now because this crew can really drink. As for dinner, I have no problem at all in doing what the majority want to do. If most want to go to Shula's for dinner on Saturday, that's fine with me. As long as we are all together, that's what counts. Don Cardi

It's getting close now. It seems just a couple weeks ago you guys were just getting back from the last meet. Btw, I assume most of you will be driving to Philly, so transportation will be adequate should we venture beyond walking distance from the hotel right??? Or should we plan on renting a car or what??? Am I the only one flying in? Mig, what's the total number of those going? TIS

Mig, NYers are so used to cabs. I have been in cabs on a few occasions in my life, but that's about it. As a matter of fact, it was Saladbar who taught me how to hail a cab when I was in NYC. :p It's really a must in NYC especially, they are all around and get you where you wanna go quickly, and seem to know where everything is. I have a confession to make to SC, Geoff & Lori.....when I met you guys for the Sopranos tour in 03: In my walking ventures beforehand, I decided to walk by where we were to meet, just so I had it down, plus I just liked walking around the city. I found it no problem. Anyway, the day came and I headed, in plenty of time, in at least what I thought was the right direction. I don't know if my brain froze or what, but I found my self "Dazed & Confused" :p and suddenly was lost. Don't know where I made a wrong turn. Anyway, I sure as hell didn't want to be late, so stepped off the curb (per SB's instructions , hailed a cab and told him that I needed to go to the fashion district (I think that's what it's called), where the big "button" was. He knew exactly where I meant, and I was probably only about 5 minutes away. I was so afraid I'd missed the tour and was so happy to see you guys still there. I may be wrong but I think 7th street had something to do with my confusion. Does it end and then pick-up again??? Directions are not my strongest trait. TIS

Yeah, if you ended up on 7th Street, you were WAY off! I love walking the city so hardly ever take cabs unless I'm in a rush. And tell you the truth, with that traffic, sometimes it doesn't help. I was so in a hurry one time that I got out of the cab and said I'll walk - I'll get there faster. I walked 3 blocks and he was still sitting in the same spot. For long distance in the city, you need to take the subway. Infinitely cheaper and faster. Tho when I'm not in a hurry, and it's nice out, I still walk. Used to walk from 42nd/8th (Port Authority) to 27th/Park to work every day, good exercise. I've walked from downtown to Port Authority a few times. The last time was from Ground Zero, and I can still tell where the blisters were on my heals!

Yea, I need to learn the subway better too. SB and I took it to go to catch the Ferry to Ellis Island, and because of Mary Cas' great instructions it wasn't a problem. However, especially if I'm by myself, I always have the fear of missing my stop and getting off in an undesirable area. I hope to use it a couple times just to learn how. I know it's second nature to those who are use to it, but it's new to me. Plus there's no "worker" there to confirm you're getting off where you want to. TIS

Does anyone know how far Shula's is from the hotel?
By the way, much of the color just left my face as I reviewed the pricelist kindly provided by Beth E. On average, about double what entrees at the Moshulu are. If we divide the tab evenly as with the last BB dinner I attended, that'll probably come to around $80-90 per person! Personally, I don't even care if Saturday's dinner is at the hotel; I'm not coming for incredible high-priced food, I'm coming to hang out with everybody.
Don' mind my venting, especially since I just came on board. No matter what...I'll go where the majority decides for Saturday night. If I put aside $1 a day till then I'll have more than enough!!
Regarding transporation, sharing a few taxi's sounds like the best idea. Once I make it to the hotel, I sure ain't driving again until it's time to head home!!

Apple, as for Shula's, the prices seem high, but, many of those entrees are big enough for 2... in Chicago many of us partnered up w/ someone who wanted the same thing and split it. So, you only need to save 50c/day now...

Originally posted by Mignon: Hey I really don't care where we eat as long as the menu has food other than seafood. Seafood does not get along with me and, I don't feel like being sick the rest of the evening. That's too bad, cuz Bookbinders is the most famous restaurant in Philly, but it's mostly seafood (apart from a couple filet mignon ( ) and other non-seafood dishes)... it just reopened after a 3 year renovation. Old Original Bookbinder’s has long been a Philadelphia landmark, and host to Presidents, local politicians, countless international dignitaries and celebrities. For over a century, it has been considered Philadelphia’s prime dining spot and social mecca. In the 1950's and 1960's, devotees of its famous five-pound lobsters included Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra and Julius Irving ("Dr. J"). In later years, Bookbinder’s continued to attract a celebrated following including David Bowie, Madonna, and Mohammad Ali, who dined alongside local residents and tourists. [ more ] This is a place I definitely would like to try -- perhaps Sunday Brunch at least? I'm going to pose this again, since no one seemed to care the last time I stated my opinion.... :p We're going to Philadelphia. I think it'd be more special to go to places that are "famously Philly" -- or at least unique. For instance, The Moshulu not only is unique in that there is only one on the planet, it's also a major "character" from GF2. As fans of GF2, I think we should definitely hit that one of the two nights, regardless. Even if the food sucks, we gotta go! My vote would be for Saturday, since that's when we'll all be there. Shula's is a fine joint, but it's a chain. There are two dozen of them scattered across our fair land. We went to the one in Chicago -- a major beef city. Nothing could've been better probably. But we're going to Philly -- and Shula's isn't unique to Philly. Again, I really don't care THAT much, I'd be happy to go there, and enjoy it, ...but don't you think going to something unique to Philly would be more fun than going to a chain restaurant? At the very least..... Bookbinders has Sunday Brunch from 11-3. I think those of us who like seafood should go. (Not sure how expensive it is - they don't list the prices...) Another definite would be Saturday lunch at Pat's, or somewhere else that has authentic Philly cheese steak! I don't know much about Philly, or what else is good or not. Perhaps someone who lives near there could help us out a bit. *ahem* Isn't "Sugar Daddy" around there? *cough* So...... now let's hear what you think.

Geoff,
Moshulu's is fine with me for Saturday. I'd be disappointed if we didn't go there at all, and I'm willing to check out the food. :p Other than Mexican food, I'll eat just about anything (except tongue :p ). And by all means we need to try the Philly Cheese steak.
Btw, I just booked my flight this week. I hear that by summer gas and airline prices will go up about 20 per cent, so I thought I'd better do it now. Anyway, if it's on schedule, I should arrive in Philly at 5:00 p.m. on Friday the 18th. How far is it from the airport to the hotel again?
Looking forward to it!!

Aww TIS you don't like tongue Don Geoffy will be so dissappointed  As far as where to eat The Moshulu is fine for dinner or just to go there for a drink and get a group pic. I've never been to a Shula's so that is fine with me to. But we have to have a cheese steak for lunchlike Geoffy suggests. What I am wondering what are we going to do during the day besides eat? We could go visit that prison that Capone was in like DMC suggested awhile back Here is a link. What else would you like to do?

The only thing is, they see Geoff and Cardi they might keep them there. :p Yea, I think Saturday is probably the day we could do another activity hu? I'm pretty easy to get along with, but to be honest, I don't care if I see the Liberty Bell and such, unless others recommend some of the sights, but I'm going to see all of you so doesn't matter. To me the peniteniary sounds more interesting than the Liberty Bell. TIS
