Two years of hearings
In the trial, which began in October 2023, over 100 witnesses were heard : 35 officers serving with the State Police, the SCO of Rome and the Police Headquarters of Cosenza and Catanzaro; 75 soldiers serving with the Carabinieri Legion "Calabria", Provincial Command of Cosenza, Operations Department, Investigative Unit and Radiomobile Operations Unit; 27 officers serving with the Guardia di Finanza of Cosenza (Economic-Financial Police Unit-Mobile Section) and Reggio Calabria (Special Currency Police Unit).
Numerous collaborators of justice were also questioned. From Celestino Abbruzzese alias Micetto and linked to the " Banana " clan of Cosenza to his wife Anna Palmieri , from Franco Bruzzese to Luciano Impieri . Men and women, once considered an integral part of the Bruzia criminal galaxy, today called to tell - in detail - the evolution of the associations operating in the province of Cosenza and belonging to the alleged " Confederation ". A thesis that of the unitary nucleus of the 'ndrangheta groups supported by the prosecution, but firmly rejected by the boss from Cosenza Francesco Patitucci . The former head of the " Italians " clan, in a hearing of the trial arising from the " Bianco e Nero " investigation made spontaneous statements and denied any charge linked to his role in the criminal "syndicate" . Of a different opinion, however, the repentant Daniele Lamanna according to whom " the Confederation was active until 2014 ".

The abbreviated procedure
A first judicial verdict had already been issued against those who opted for the proceedings celebrated with the abbreviated rite and at the end of which the preliminary hearing judge, Fabiana Giacchetti, had decided to sentence 82 defendants to ten centuries, also ordering 37 acquittals. The head of the alleged Confederation of the mala bruzia would be none other than « Francesco Patitucci », for the boss – today in 41 bis – the sentence inflicted in the abbreviated trial is 20 years .
According to the prosecution, he would be « the authoritative and undisputed reference for all the associates of the 'ndrangheta confederation operating in the city and in the hinterland of Cosenza, having assumed over time the highest 'ndrangheta qualities corresponding to that of “company boss” ». A pivotal figure and capable of acting as a glue between the various groups, as a mediator in the thorniest issues and ready to delegate when necessary to his « dolphin », Roberto Porcaro . Even for the former collaborator of justice, the sentence in the abbreviated form is 20 years.
The same sentence was also issued against some members of the “ Zingari ” clan better known as “ Banana ”. These are Antonio Abbruzzese (born in 1984) , Luigi Abbruzzese , Marco Abbruzzese and Andrea Greco known as “U Tupinaru”.

The twists and turns
The “ Reset ” trial has featured numerous twists and turns. Above all, the repentance followed by sensational about-faces first by Danilo Turboli and then by Roberto Porcaro , both linked to the “ Italiani ” clan. The two, after having filled entire interrogation reports given before the District magistrates, accusing each other of numerous illicit conducts, have recanted, claiming that they have invented stories far from reality. Those who have chosen to continue their path of collaboration with justice are Ivan Barone and Francesco Greco .

relationship and new concepts
The 'ndrangheta? "People still haven't understood what it really is"
Beniamino Fazio, director of the Catanzaro DIA, pushes for a "civil knowledge" of the phenomenon. "It is no longer just about clans and criminal gangs"
Published: 06/06/2025 – 18:58

CATANZARO «We no longer want to reduce everything to a mere list of the clans present in Calabria, the 'ndrangheta is now something different» . This is how Beniamino Fazio, director of the DIA of Catanzaro, begins while illustrating the latest report which this time includes the whole of 2024. And he also explains why the location chosen this year is not the headquarters of the Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate in the capital city, but the Chamber of Commerce. Why? «Because this is the place designated for the economic development of businesses. In Calabria this economic development is “held back” to use a euphemism by the 'ndrangheta», explained Fazio. And so «we must underline the business-entrepreneurial vocation of the 'ndrangheta, capable of silently inserting itself into the economic fabric, constantly changing shape to escape pursuers». According to Fazio, today, even trivializing the concepts, the 'ndrangheta is no longer just a series of criminal gangs and articulations «as people think because today the 'ndrangheta is not exclusively present where there are manifestations of violence but is present in the social and economic life of citizens».

Locals and gangs "trivialize the concept"
The concept of the 'ndrangheta formed by clans is for Fazio a concept to be overcome because «that is the last link, the most down-to-earth and that is only a small component of a criminal organization that is one of the strongest in the world, this should not be forgotten because if we talk about "'ndrangheta premises then we trivialize the concept».
According to the director of the DIA of Catanzaro, therefore, «there is a lack of real knowledge of the phenomenon, we are reduced only and exclusively to the knowledge of the criminal on duty. What is not known, however, is the business-entrepreneurial vocation of the 'ndrangheta and, above all, the upper levels that we have been identifying for 30 years now». For Fazio «there are prominent elements of the various criminal organizations, therefore 'ndrangheta, Cosa Nostra and Camorra that together do not make occasional alliances, but have had stable relationships for more than 30 years. Therefore we can speak not of an organization, but of real criminal systems, because they have stable relationships over time».

The "civil knowledge" of the 'ndrangheta
Starting from a broader sensitivity and “civil knowledge” of Calabrian organized crime, according to Fazio. «I want to make people aware of the 'ndrangheta and therefore this phenomenon», also explaining how infiltration into the economic fabric occurs in many cases now.
«People do not perceive that perhaps the baker down the street starts a commercial activity but, in addition to the mere and simple giving of money, he is forced to provide material such as flour, he is forced to provide labor and, in that case, if he were in economic difficulty, he must resort to usury. Money that obviously the 'ndrangheta lends without any particular guarantee, and therefore the entrepreneur is slowly swallowed up», explains Fazio. Who has the bakery down the street and who buys bread every day, do they perceive the existence of the 'ndrangheta? No. «The problem is this, people do not perceive it for what it really is. They only identify it as a sort of criminal gang». ( g.curcio@corrierecal.it )

“Triplice Frontera”, the black heart of the 'ndrangheta drug trafficking in South America
Land of refuge for fugitives. Dense network of alliances with the main cartels and criminal groups. The snapshot in the Dia report
Published: 06/07/2025 – 6:57

ROME South America is confirmed as a profitable land for the 'ndrangheta's business in the international drug trafficking sector. An «essential» and «strategic» base and logistics center for the management of business, for which the Calabrian organization has been able to weave a dense network of alliances with the main cartels and criminal groups on the continent . A snapshot of the situation is taken from the DIA report on the activity carried out in 2024, which notes that the territory can be considered strategic for «international organized crime, whose complex networks deal mainly with drug trafficking, money laundering, without neglecting the aiding of fugitives». And in particular, the area of ??the Triple Frontera, which connects Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, has become «a strategic hub for drug trafficking, smuggling of goods and money laundering».

Alliances and Business in South America
The picture that emerges is that of a 'ndrangheta that is increasingly globally oriented, capable of forming strategic alliances, fueling a million-dollar business, thanks to valid relationships with local emissaries. In this strategy, Colombia - which has become a real stronghold for criminal operations - is used as an "operational base for shipments directed to Europe ". Here, the Calabrian organization has been able to build solid relationships in particular with the Gulf Clan and the dissident groups of the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) and the ELN (National Liberation Army), which have control of the main cocaine routes that pass through Ecuador, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. While in Brazil the Primeiro Comando da Capitai (PCC) is active, which manages the flow of drugs directed to Africa and Europe. Ecuador , located between Colombia and Peru, has become " an essential logistics center for the management of drugs " which , thanks to various international criminal groups, including the 'ndrangheta, are destined for the European and US markets. Peru , considered " one of the most productive territories of cocaine in the world , records the presence of associations that actively collaborate with the Italian mafias to generate prolific profits in the drug sector". In Argentina , the presence of the 'ndrangheta and the Mexican cartels underlines the role of the country as " a crossroads of international drug trafficking, which exploits the waterways to transport cocaine to the global market".

Land of refuge for fugitives
The deep roots of the 'ndrangheta in the South American continent - emerges from the DIA report - also extends to the ability to offer refuge and support to its fugitive affiliates, as evidence of the close connection between the Calabrian clans and the South American territory there are the police operations and the capture of important exponents.
Among the fugitives captured and extradited to Italy is Santos Medina Familia , Dominican born in 1971, alleged drug trafficker at the head of an organization based in Rome with branches abroad. He was among the 100 fugitives considered among the most dangerous but was identified and extradited on March 4, 2024, at the conclusion of the complex extradition process promoted by Italy against the Dominican Republic.
Also returning to Italy in handcuffs in 2024 was 'Ndrangheta broker Vincenzo Pasquino , who had been detained in Brazil since 2021, the year in which he was arrested in a residence in Joao Pessoa by the South American country's federal police and the ROS Carabinieri, after a period on the run, while he was in the company of the 'Ndrangheta boss of Africo and drug trafficker Rocco Morabito .

the historical testimony
Brusca, the 'ndrangheta and the “comparato” between Piromalli and Totò Riina «to settle the feuds»
The old stories of the former district boss of San Giuseppe Jato, architect of the Capaci massacre and witness of the strategic alliance between the two mafias
Published: 09/06/2025 – 6:55

LAMEZIA TERME For decades Cosa Nostra and the 'ndrangheta have cultivated a very close relationship based on shared visions and exchanges of favors, from arms trafficking to drug trafficking, to the point of cementing what at a certain point had become the common goal to pursue: to influence and bend the very life of the State. The investigators of the Reggio Calabria Anti-Mafia District are convinced of this, there are investigations and sentences - such as, for example, the "Crimine" trial - to confirm it, but also the most recent investigation into the "'Ndrangheta stragista".

“The Saint”
The pyramid structure, a group of families to dominate the entire national territory and beyond, up to the existence of a structure superior to the "Province" or "La Santa", composed of very few top figures capable of managing confidential relationships and relations, even with public and institutional apparatuses, as well as Freemasons and members of deviant secret services.
In short, a historical context in which it is still possible to glimpse figures who are still relevant today such as Giovanni Brusca . The "executioner of Capaci", the Cosa Nostra mafia boss who activated the remote control that triggered the explosion on May 23, 1992 in which Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo and the escort agents died, has in fact returned free after having served, in total, 25 years in prison, of which the last 4 on probation.

The refuge in Calabria
The name of the boss of San Giuseppe Jato is not new in those episodes that have constituted the historical basis of the Calabrian 'ndrangheta, quite the opposite. It was the same collaborator of justice, among the many statements made, who spoke of the close connection between the Calabrian and Sicilian mafia. When, for example, he spoke of Antonio Salamone, the former head of the San Giuseppe Jato district who, according to Brusca «had found refuge in Calabria and who, with the help of exponents or subjects close to the 'ndrangheta, had attempted to "fix" even some trials in the Supreme Court».
It was again Brusca who spoke of the relationships that had existed since the 1970s between Cosa Nostra and the 'ndrangheta, specifying that he had learned «of the existence of a "comparato" between Piromalli and Riina, who had "got involved in settling the feuds"». A circumstance that the Sicilian repentant says he learned «from his father, as well as from Riina himself and his brother-in-law Bagarella».

Hospitality in Cefalù, Riina and Bagarella
Like other informants, Brusca confirms another episode, that of the hospitality guaranteed at the “Euromare” village, «managed by Tullio Cannella, a front man for the Gravianos, to some Calabrians who had come into conflict with other individuals». Brusca had also specified that, after 1992, the relations between the Sicilians and the Calabrians were handled by Totò Riina himself and, after January 1993, that is, after his capture, those who were in charge of them would have been mostly «Bagarella and Messina Denaro, although we cannot exclude that they were also entertained by Giuseppe Graviano».

The massacres and the Calabrians in Formello
In relation to the sharing of the massacre strategy between Cosa Nostra and the 'ndrangheta, Giovanni Brusca himself had also said that, during a meeting with Giuseppe Graviano in Misilmeri, before the arrest of the accused, «he had been asked to contact, through Leonardo Vitale, some Calabrians in Formello, near Rome, so that they would commit dynamite attacks against monuments and thus continue the massacre strategy». Brusca said that this Vitale «had told him about a Calabrian individual, Pino Franco or Franco Pino from Cosenza, who he had met in prison and who lived in Formello, that the Calabrians had “made themselves available”, but immediately afterwards Bagarella was arrested and therefore the plan ran aground». Mafia and drugs, the Calabrian 'ndrina of Pelle "invades" Catania

CATANIA – The Santapaolas do business with everyone. They tolerate the rise of new families in the city, from the Cappellos on down , and they also move into other territories. They command unchallenged in the provinces of Enna, Siracusa, Ragusa and a piece of Caltanissetta, and they even look around.

The DIA wrote this in its report to Parliament. “The consolidated and synergic forms of collaboration between the various island groups would also seem to reflect the propensity of the Catania Cosa Nostra to establish relationships with other mafia groups, in particular for the supply of cocaine,” the investigators wrote.

Operation Devotion and Pelle Gambazza
The anti-mafia directorate cites a police investigation that led to the so-called 'Operation Devotion' on 19 June 2024. "The investigations - the anti-mafia directorate recalls - highlighted the existence of a solid commercial agreement between some members of the Cappello clan and some subjects of the 'ndrina Pelle - Gambazza di San Luca".

The latter emerge as suppliers of cocaine to other groups. Furthermore, a well-established business relationship emerges between the Pelle Gambazza and other clans, “with leading members of the Santapaola-Ercolano family, through the Nizza, with the Mazzei through the Lo Cicero and with the Cursoti Milanesi”.

A 'strong influence' of the 'ndrina
These businesses would therefore seem to demonstrate the "strong influence of the aforementioned 'ndrina on the Catania territory". This does not take away the fact that the Santapaolas continue to be hegemonic on the territory. This is true both for the capital, where they are divided into groups or teams, operating in some neighborhoods from which "they take their name and to which a certain organizational and decision-making autonomy is recognized, and in the remaining provincial territory through the operation of groups and clans".

“ The family also boasts branches in the province of Messina – confirms the DIA report – maintaining consolidated and functional relationships with the Cosa Nostra families of Mistretta, Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto and with those active in the Nebrodi quadrant”.

The reorganization of the Santapaolas
However, following the arrest of his latest cases, he is reportedly “going through an important reorganization phase.” Operation Ombra revealed this, but not only that. “A member of the family, although detained, continued to exercise his power by deciding on the reorganization of top roles and designating new group leaders.”

“ Furthermore, his decisions emanated from daily contacts with the affiliates and, in particular, through his brother who would have dealt with the resolution of disputes both internal and external to the family. The investigations would then have had as their object the Santapaola component, documenting the reorganization of the top roles and allowing the identification of the new regent of the Catania Cosa Nostra and his direct associates”.

criminal interests
'Ndrangheta drug lords "assault" the port of Livorno
Data from the Report of the Regional Observatory of Legality of Tuscany. The Livorno port is a "hub of illicit trafficking at an international level"
Published: 10/06/2025 – 18:05

FLORENCE Drug trafficking is «one of the direct sources of income» that guarantees cooperative relationships between Cosa Nostra, 'Ndrangheta and Camorra with the supply of large quantities on a large scale. In this context, the port of Livorno represents a «strategic hub», «one of the main entry points for drug trafficking, mainly operated by the 'Ndrangheta, the wholesaler of Europe» . This is what emerged this morning in Florence at the presentation of the report of the Regional Observatory of Legality, which shows a mix of interests in Tuscany between various Italian and foreign mafia and criminal organizations, as is also highlighted in the Report for the year 2023 of the Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate. «Among the criminal forms to be taken into close consideration», we read in the Report, there is the one of Chinese origin, which led to the so-called “war of the crutches”, with attempted murders, incendiary bombs in Italy and Spain. Episodes that have led, in the last few months alone, to six arrests in Calabria, Sicily and Veneto.
Among the most active clans are the Calabrian, Campanian and Sicilian groups, but also Albanian, Romanian, Chinese, Maghrebian and North African ones. The role played by the 'ndrangheta is significant, especially in drug trafficking. The Calabrian criminal organisation – as emerges from the Report – represents for the Sicilian one a «preferential channel» especially for the purchase of cocaine .

The port of Livorno is a “strategic hub” for drug trafficking
Specific chapter for the port of Livorno, considered "an international hub for illicit trafficking" , attributable to the Camorra, the 'Ndrangheta, Sicilian mafia clans, and organizations from Puglia and Lazio". And "there is no lack of foreign organizations, especially Albanian, for drug trafficking, and Nigerian ones". Regarding trafficking in the port, it is also highlighted that it is "in line with the ports of Central and South America", but also "with the ports of Genoa and Gioia Tauro". Significant - as highlighted in the report - is the operation conducted by the Guardia di Finanza and the anti-fraud unit of the Customs office which "hit drug trafficking along the Ecuador-Livorno axis managed by Albanian clans with the seizure of over two tons of cocaine". The president of the Observatory, Don Andrea Bigalli
, raised the alarm on this point during the presentation, underlining, with regard to the port of Livorno, how it has been « for a long time one of the main entry points for drug trafficking, especially by the 'ndrangheta, the wholesaler of Europe ». «I have been asking the Region for a long time – he said – to finance, also through the work of the various Observatories, not least the one I preside over, a serious analysis of the relationship between foreign mafias, Italian mafias and local foreign communities, because, it must always be remembered, foreign mafias act only under the aegis of national mafias ».
