BALLERINA

The first spinoff in an attempt to keep the John Wick universe relevant stars Ana de Armas as Eve, a young girl taken in after the death of her father and trained as a Ruska Roma. One day while on assignment, she cross paths with a member of the group who killed her father (the group has a distinguishable mark on their wrist to proclaim who they belong to). With this new found information, Eve goes on a path of destruction in order to avenge her father. A revenge tale as old as time itself but still works within these parameters. de Armas handles the physicality of the role well and is believable for the most part as Eve. She's put in the work here and it shows onscreen. The film still has a few brutal fight scenes for the Wick fans who came for blood so they won't be disappointed (especially the figure skates scene). While this is a step below any of the entries in the John Wick franchise, it is a worthy spinoff and one in which I would welcome a sequel to. Also, props to Gabriel Byrne who plays the baddie of the film as The Chancellor. 6/10
