The technological challenge to the 'ndrangheta, the reforms and the "intercepted hackers"
Training, investments and investigations into IT experts at the service of crime. "If arrested they can collaborate"

COSENZA «We are moving elastically, a little forward, a little backward, unfortunately this effervescence of regulatory changes from the previous government to this one is not helping us. All these reforms, even if not directly, concern mafia trials, at the same time as they slow down the ordinary criminal process: the courts are clogged up and the effects also have repercussions on mafia trials ». Thoughts and words of the prosecutor of Naples Nicola Gratteri , recently in Calabria – in Celico – to participate in a talk on the new mafias. The reforms – underlines the prosecutor – «are going to impact the slowing down of the entire procedural system, because 1,600 magistrates are missing and by dint of proposing regulatory reforms we are increasingly slow in fighting the mafias ».

The Three-Headed Mafia
The recent operation called “ Millennium ” by the DDA of Reggio Calabria, the investigation “ Reset ” by the DDA of Catanzaro against the 'ndrangheta of Cosenza and “ Hydra ” by the Anti-Mafia District of Milan represent three examples of investigative activity that prefigure the existence of a sort of mutual aid between clans . If in the Calabrian investigations, the 'ndrine do business by dividing the territory into areas of competence, the capital of fashion and finance – instead – would be supported by a balance linked to the cooperation of Cosa Nostra, Camorra and 'Ndrangheta. « There have always been interactions between the mafias in the world and also in Italy. Thirty years ago in the north the 'Ndrangheta and Cosa Nostra worked together. Today the 'Ndrangheta works in Albania with the local mafia. Twenty years ago I conducted an investigation into international cocaine trafficking between the 'Ndrangheta and Palermo's Cosa Nostra, this interaction is not new to 2025 or 2024, it has always been there. They maintain their identities, their characteristic structures, their criminal philosophy but when it comes to doing business and commerce – if necessary or convenient – ??they ally themselves under the Duomo of Milan, in Turin or Bologna ", Gratteri emphasizes.

The dangers of the web and investments
As prosecutor Gratteri had the opportunity to argue, " the Camorra moves better on the dark web than the 'ndrangheta ." Which, however, remains among the most dangerous organizations, capable of finding space in the black market of the network. And then it becomes necessary to intervene, with staff training and investments. But not only that. " The only useful reform concerns the possibility, from July 2024, of investigating cyber, or intercepting hackers . Who - once arrested - can become collaborators of justice as if they were mafia bosses. This is a useful and serious thing. There is no immediate reform." (f.benincasa@corrierecal.it)
