'Ndrangheta, tradition and entrepreneurial modernity: the clans conquering Lazio
From the most important Calabrian families to business with the Camorra: a "complex and multifaceted" criminal panorama made possible by a "strategic cooperation"

ROME «In thirty years of stable presence in the Lazio region, they have developed the ability to integrate in an organized and structured manner with indigenous criminal groups», in a tested system capable of «identifying the targets to attack and at the same time absorbing overlaps, tensions and frictions». Thus the Camorra, 'Ndrangheta and Cosa Nostra associations have been able to pursue their illicit interests in Lazio and Rome, specifically, «in some cases even through the creation of articulations of their own criminal structures, interacting with indigenous groups and foreign formations, traceable to the so-called ethnic mafias, in progressive evolution and adaptation». The picture is outlined in the DIA report on the activity carried out in 2024, which speaks of a "complex and multifaceted" criminal landscape made possible by "strategic cooperation" between the various criminal entities that "is confirmed to be closely connected to sophisticated dynamics of money laundering and reinvestment of capital of illicit origin, in particular from drug trafficking, which continues to represent one of the main sources of income for mafia organizations". The report notes that, after the regions historically dominated by traditional mafia groups, Lazio emerges as one of the territories most exposed to the convergence of illicit interests of different nature: "The criminal presence appears to be rooted not only in the capital, but also in the other provinces, outlining an extremely complex context. The coexistence of traditional mafia structures, native groups and foreign criminal organizations has generated a multilevel model for the management of drug trafficking and for the reinvestment of illicit proceeds". A context in which " drug trafficking appears to be the most insidious threat ".

The infiltration of the 'ndrangheta
The influence and pervasiveness of the 'ndrangheta is very strong and «it is currently configured as the criminal organization with the greatest ability to combine tradition and entrepreneurial modernity ». The Calabrian mafia organization – we read in the report – is «aware that the ancient rules of conduct, the rigid respect of hierarchies and the bonds of mutual cooperation are essential elements not only for internal cohesion, but also for the effective management of its own illicit activities». And again: «Its ability to preserve archaic rites, while adapting to the logic of the contemporary market, allows this criminal organization to maximize profits, while consolidating its influence in economic and financial contexts». A pervasiveness «whose ramifications in the Lazio region, especially in the metropolitan area of ??Rome, have demonstrated a high capacity for infiltration into the economic fabric and into some sectors of the Public Administration ».

The projections of the 'ndrangheta in Lazio
There are several clans whose projections have long since reached the Roman territory. Among the associations originating from municipalities in the province of Reggio Calabria, the 'ndrine Alvaro-Carzo of Sinopoli stand out , although weakened by recent counter-activities, Gallico of Palmi, Pelle-Vottari, Pizzata, Nirta and Strangio of San Luca, Marando of Platì, Bellocco of Rosarno, Morabito of Africo Nuovo (whose attempts at interference are concentrated mainly in the area north of Rome and in particular in the municipalities of Morlupo, Rignano Flaminio, Riano, Castelnuovo di Porto and Capena), Bruzzaniti of Africo, Mammoliti of Oppido Mamertina and Castellace, Piromalli and Molè of Gioia Tauro, and Mazzagatti of Oppido Mamertina (in the Castelli Romani area).
Some hegemonic groups in the Vibo Valentia area, and in particular the Fiarè of San Gregorio di Ippona , in turn linked to the Mancuso of Limbadi , have also shown, over time, interests in reinvestment activities in the Capital, while a local 'ndrangheta, mainly headed by the Gallace-Novella, Madaffari, Tedesco and Perronace groups , had in fact assumed control of some large areas of the coast south of Rome, as a projection of the 'ndrine of Santa Cristina d'Aspromonte and Guardavalle.

The fight against clans
In light of this scenario, - it is noted - to stem attempts at mafia penetration into legal economic activities and counteract the conditioning of corporate governance, the Prefect of Rome has issued 31 anti-mafia interdiction orders, mainly attributable to the evidentiary findings of the police operations called "Tritone", "Eureka" and "Assedio" , against companies operating in the sectors of catering, tourism and hotel, trade and rental of motor vehicles, construction, real estate brokerage and water treatment. Similarly, the Prefect of Latina has issued 17 interdictions against companies operating in the sectors of catering, marketing of agricultural products, construction and public transport. Finally, the Prefect of Viterbo has issued 7 orders against companies operating in the agricultural, tourism, logistics and ferrous metal processing sectors.
Operation “Tritone” , in particular, had revealed the existence of a 'ndrangheta branch active in the Anzio and Nettuno area and of two distinct criminal groups, detachments of the 'ndrine of Santa Cristina d'Aspromonte in the province of Reggio Calabria and of Guardavalle in the province of Catanzaro.
