'Ndrangheta, from Pelle to Romeo: here's how the Reggio clans took over Turin

TURIN A lively economic context with a GDP up 0.4% in the first six months compared to the same period of the previous year. But also a regional economic situation that has been affected by various factors, starting with the decline in foreign demand and the weakness of the manufacturing sector , particularly in the automotive sector. It is in this context, that of Piedmont, that the 'ndrangheta clans continue to proliferate, just as they have been since the distant 1950s of the last century , giving the Piedmontese context a 'ndrangheta connotation dating back to the period of internal migratory phenomena.

The 'ndrangheta in these parts is – again according to the data from the DIA – the mafia matrix that has shown a more functional and complex development of its criminal structures over time. Among the "winning" factors are the rigorous criteria for the division of sectors and zones of influence. As has emerged from the latest data, in fact, the first 'ndrangheta cells have evolved to form the typical premises, as has already emerged in the important investigations of the last two decades, confirming the "reproduction of structured and distinct Calabrian mafia organisms" in constant contact with the mother house in Reggio, confirming the unitary nature of the 'ndrangheta.
The relationships of mixing with institutions and entrepreneurs
According to what has emerged from the last two semesters of 2024, therefore, in Piedmont the mafias, and in particular the Calabrian clans, have always tried to establish relationships of mixing with the representatives of local institutions, professions and entrepreneurship, creating that gray area in which "the exercise of power and the government of the resources of the territory is functional to a logic of growth not only of economic capital but also and above all of "social" capital", notes the Dia in the report. A phenomenon documented in the last period by the Dia and other police forces, with particular reference to the economic sectors in which the opportunities for profit are greater.
Tourism, services and real estate
Speaking of territories, recent investigations have revealed the predominant interests in the tourism-hotel sector, catering, management of public services and real estate by the associates of the Volpiano club , considered, among other things, responsible for the reinvestment of illicit capital also through front men, notes the DIA. The latest and significant investigations have also shed light on the infiltration of associations linked to Reggio Calabria clans also in the construction and transport sector, resulting in the undue awarding of contracts for road and highway maintenance work. The interests of the associates in this case of the Asti club in the demolition sector, the trade of newspapers and magazines and monopoly goods and the wholesale trade of non-ferrous metals have also emerged. In the province of Novara , individuals considered to be “close” to mafia groups originating from Locride have manifested their interests in the wholesale trade of petroleum products and automotive lubricants and heating fuels.
