The murder of two embassy staffers marks a grim escalation of violence since October 7, 2023.

But for decades, Israeli embassies, from Turkey to Thailand, London to Buenos Aires, have been targeted by attacks claiming the lives of diplomats, their families and civilians caught in the crossfire.

In the wake of Wednesday night's deadly shooting in Washington, D.C. in which two Israeli embassy employees were killed, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he had ordered enhanced security measures at Israeli diplomatic missions worldwide.

Elias Rodriguez, 31 was formally charged with two counts of first degree murder, murder of foreign officials, causing the death of a person through the use of a firearm, discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence.
