Operation “Millennium” began at dawn on May 21, 2025 , one of the largest operations conducted in recent years against the 'ndrangheta . The Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Reggio Calabria , on the input of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate led by prosecutor Giuseppe Lombardo , are executing 97 precautionary measures in half of Italy.
In the crosshairs are some of the most influential gangs in the province of Reggio , accused of having formed a real superordinate criminal alliance , capable of managing international drug trafficking and also penetrating economic and political circuits.
A national operation, a Calabrian heart
The precautionary measures were carried out in 14 provinces : Reggio Calabria, Milan, Monza and Brianza, Pavia, Nuoro, Bologna, Cosenza, Catanzaro, Vibo Valentia, Rome, Rimini, Verona, Agrigento and Turin . In addition to the local military , the ROS , the Calabria and Sicily Helicopter Squadron , the 14th “Calabria” Battalion , the Dog Unit , the 8th Helicopter Unit of Vibo Valentia, as well as special units for international cooperation (ICAN) coordinated by the SCIP of Interpol , were also involved .
The charges: mafia, drugs, extortion and politics
The 97 suspects , hit by three separate custody orders signed by the GIP of the Court of Reggio Calabria , are charged – in various capacities – with the crimes of: mafia-type criminal association , external participation in mafia association , association for the purpose of drug trafficking , dealing and possession of narcotics , extortion , kidnapping for the purpose of extortion , political-mafia electoral exchange , illegal possession and carrying of weapons . A real arsenal of crimes that outlines the widespread and tentacular infiltration of the 'ndrangheta in illicit trafficking, business and politics.
A super-dome for drugs
According to investigators, the gangs involved would have created a unified and organized structure , capable of monopolizing drug trafficking in vast territories through international channels. No longer just autonomous clans, but a superior direction that guaranteed logistics, protection and management of profits , in a criminal balance functional to everyone. The investigation, still in the preliminary phase , sheds light on a strategic leap in quality of the mafia organization: operational unity in place of traditional rivalries.
“Front” companies seized in the North
The operation also led to the preventive seizure of two companies , active in the restaurant and construction sectors , considered tools for laundering money and supporting the logistics of the mafia association. The companies – according to what emerges from the documents – could be traced back to some of the suspects. A further confirmation of how the 'ndrangheta is increasingly integrated into the "legal" economic fabric , even in the northern regions.
The excellent suspects
The former regional councilors of Calabria, as reported by Ansa, Sebastiano Romeo of the PD and Alessandro Nicolò , at the time of Fratelli d'Italia, are investigated in a state of freedom in the Millenium investigation coordinated by the Dda of Reggio Calabria. Among the politicians involved is also the former regional councilor Pasquale Tripodi , for whom however the aggravating circumstance of mafia has been excluded .
