As discussed, Jimmy acquire his "button" very late in life. But once he got there he was almost immediately bumped up to a capos post and remained at that level for the better part of the remainder of his life.

And as I wrote, by the time his day in the sun was over, there was basically no gambling "empire" left of his to take over. NYS had long ago legalized "off-track" horse betting, his numbers biz went out the window with the advent of LOTTO a few years later, and by the late 1970s, legalized gambling had come to Atlantic City, and later, Connecticut.
