NOS News • today, 12:11 Police find coffins full of cocaine on A29 Police found two coffins full of cocaine in a van on the A29 motorway near Numansdorp last night. The driver of the black van, a 30-year-old Frenchman, has been arrested. The man was probably on his way to Rotterdam and stood out due to suspicious driving, reports regional broadcaster Rijnmond . The police stopped the van and asked the driver for an explanation. The Frenchman told the officers that he had two coffins with two bodies in them. But the papers were wrong. The police officers decided to drive to a funeral director to clarify the matter. 250 kilos of coke The undertaker discovered that the coffins contained no bodies but a number of sports bags with a total of more than 250 kilos of cocaine. The drugs have a street value of 13 million euros. Ketamine: What is it, what does it do, and why is the drug in the news now? According to the police, it is the largest ketamine seizure ever in the Netherlands. In a shed in Muiderberg, officers found 2,000 kilos of the drug earlier this month, with a street value of 55 million euros. Four questions about 'keta', which is originally a painkiller, but has become popular as a party drug in recent years. What does ketamine do and what are the risks? After ingesting a small amount, the user may enter a dreamy, relaxed state, where sounds are intensified or distorted. At higher doses, it can feel like you are leaving your body. After an overdose, a person may enter a "k-hole." Users may have difficulty speaking or moving; some have near-death experiences. According to the Trimbos Institute, which conducts research into drug use, ketamine use can also cause lasting symptoms, such as memory loss, severe abdominal pain attacks ('k-cramps') and bladder problems. "There are stories of people who have to urinate every ten minutes or have pain when urinating," says Margriet van Laar of the research institute. She emphasizes that ketamine can be addictive and that its use can lead to a vicious circle, because ketamine is also used as a painkiller. "People who have used ketamine can get bladder problems and then use ketamine again to suppress the pain." The Jeroen Bosch Hospital in Den Bosch has had a special ketamine outpatient clinic since 2022. Patients are treated there and an attempt is also made to break the vicious circle. Ketamine is in a legal grey area. Despite being used as a party drug, it is not on the lists of prohibited hard and soft drugs, because it is also used as a medicine. There are strict conditions attached to it. For example, the substance may not be traded without registration and possession of large quantities is prohibited.
