Irish national charged after more than £950,000 of cannabis seized


An Irish woman has been charged with drugs offences after more than £950,000 worth of cannabis was seized at Belfast City Airport.

Stella Doyle-Daly, 18, from Hanover Street, Dublin, was arrested by National Crime Agency officers after she was stopped at the airport on Tuesday.

She had travelled from Thailand via Doha and Heathrow airport. A search of two suitcases by Border Force officers found almost 48 kilos of cannabis.

Doyle-Daly was interviewed by NCA officers yesterday and charged with drugs importation offences.

She appeared at Laganside Magistrates Court this morning and was remanded in custody until a bail hearing on Tuesday.

NCA Belfast Branch Commander David Cunningham said: "The NCA continues in our work to prevent drugs from reaching the streets of Northern Ireland. We will pursue the organised crime groups behind importations and the couriers paid to transport the drugs across the border.

"The gangs behind these smuggling attempts are only interested in making money. Their couriers, who are likely to be arrested and prosecuted, are expendable.

"We would appeal to those thinking of getting involved drug smuggling on behalf of these gangs to think about the consequences of their actions – you will be identified and prosecuted."

In August, the NCA issued a warning to travellers arriving into the UK from Thailand, Canada and the USA that they face jail sentences if caught attempting to smuggle cannabis into the country. However, arrests are still being made and the amount of cannabis seized in the UK so far in 2024 is three times more than the whole of 2023.

The increase in these seizures is fuelled by organised crime gangs who have access to cannabis grown overseas, in locations where it is legal, who are recruiting couriers to transport it to the UK where it can generate greater profit for them than growing the drugs themselves.

People travelling with drugs as couriers reported being told by their recruiters that they were only risking a fine if caught. However, the maximum sentence for cannabis importation in the UK is up to 14 years in prison.

Just yesterday (25 September) two Malaysian nationals were jailed for 20 months after being caught smuggling 37kg of Cannabis in their luggage in April of this year, having travelled to Edinburgh from Thailand.

Cocaine-smuggling ring busted following a major operation supported by Eurojust; 61 arrested in Italy


Some 135 individuals are under investigation following the arrests of 66 individuals during a major operation against Albanian drug-trafficking ring in Italy.

The investigation had been requested by Brescia’s Guardia di Finanza and was coordinated by anti-mafia prosecutors Erica Battaglia and Francesco Milanesi. Among the 61 individuals arrested in Italy, there is Vincenzo Bruno, who is related to members of Brindisi’s Sacra Corona unita. The man was allegedly in touch with the criminal organisation active in Albania that was importing cocaine into Italy from Holland and Spain.

According to a Guardia di Finanza official two different groups emerged during the investigation: an Italo-Chinese and an Albanian one. The latter were in charge of trafficking while the former was responsible for laundering the proceeds of crime.

The Albanian led-organised crime group had been selling cocaine from Latin America for at least four years, mainly in the north of Italy. The drugs were imported from South America to Spain and the Netherlands using commercial shipping. The cocaine was then transported over land using heavy vehicles.

Until the drugs were distributed out, the cocaine was allegedly stored in five warehouse and storage centres located in Brescia, Romano di Lombardia and Palazzolo sull’Oglio, before it was distributed. The money was laundered through an Italian-Chinese individuals living in Brescia. They set up an extensive network of enterprises which supplied fake invoices for a total value of around €375 million.

On Wednesday, 45 suspects were arrested, most of them in Italy. A day earlier, 21 suspects involved in the sale of cocaine in and around the city of Brescia were arrested. In total, 66 arrests were made.

In a statement, Eurojust said it set up a coordination centre this week to support and coordinate the actions of all authorities involved.

During the investigations and the action day, for an estimated amount of €4 million in cash was seized, as well as 360 kilograms of cocaine, luxury vehicles and watches, telecommunications equipment, arms and ammunition.

The arrested individuals will be charged with the trafficking of illicit drugs, money laundering and investment fraud.

During this week’s action day, over 400 officers were deployed across Italy.

To assist the authorities on the ground, Eurojust set up a coordination centre at its premises in The Hague and supported the execution of European Arrest Warrants and requests for Mutual Legal Assistance towards Albania and Switzerland.

Europol facilitated the exchange of information between the involved countries and provided operational coordination as well as analytical support. On the action day, a Europol analyst with a mobile office was deployed to cross-check information on the spot in Italy.

German police arrest suspects after discovery of 2.1 tons of cocaine
The German police have intercepted over 2000 kilos of cocaine in Hamburg in the past week, and arrested 12 people in connection with this. This was reported by the German news channel NDR this weekend.

A special unit of the German police had a truck in their sights last week, which was suspected of containing drugs. When they followed the truck, it suddenly deviated from the route to the customs checkpoint and they tried to replace the load with bananas at a shipping hall. The police intervened there. They found 2.1 tons of cocaine.

Twelve arrests followed in connection with the discovery. The arrested persons came mainly from Hamburg.

Street value
The drugs have been seized. Police believe the cocaine has a street value of one hundred million euros.

The role of the port of Hamburg in global cocaine smuggling is growing. This was already apparent last year from research statistics from German customs and police.
