In two previous threads I started, we take an interactive look at some of the gangsters who served decades behind bars, but were later released as broken old ex-convicts to “technically” die as free men.
Or the lucky fellas, the goodfellas, who were fortunate enough to largely skit the law their entire lives to die within the comfort of their own homes, in their own bed, with their “shoes off” as the mob saying goes.
But through the years there were many many other hoodlums who were not as fortunate as their underworld brethren, and ended up meeting their maker while still locked-up like dogs.

Although, admittedly, a Herculean task, let’s try and compile a list of who some of these men were.
I’ll go first. Here’s two who quickly come to mind….
Lucchese capo Giovanni “Big John” Ormento. This thrice-convicted prolific heroin trafficker was eventually sentenced to served 40 years in jail. He died behind bars while still serving out his term.
Lucchese soldier John “Johnny Dio” Dioguardi. This legendary bad guy served many jail sentences over the course of his career, but eventually died while still in federal prison for his myriad of criminal activity.
